Now I was watching oprah today  and her show had some clips of North Korea and how they were cut off pretty much completely from the rest of the world.Anyway a few parts showed the military, and the troops looked to be carrying sks with grenades attached. Are they still using these weapons.

They probably carry whatever they can get. Ive heard Iraq troops carrying and using old guns like the Mauser 98k and Mosin rifles. Ive also read of U.S soldiers lifting guns such as BYF44 P.38 and a Remington Rand 1911a1 that was refurbished. Heck one of the actual armies of Iraq now carry the Walther P.1 because 10,000 were donated to them by Germany. So it wouldn't shock me to hear about Korea being it's 3rd world and all to be using sks's.

The North Korean Army is equipped with AK-47s and probably AKMs, both locally-produced variants and Russian-supplied guns, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there was quite a few Chinese Type 56 copies in service as well. They were equipped with the SKS before the AK, and undoubtedly large numbers still exist in service, mostly in the militia but surely in the regular service as well.

Communist nations have a habit of never throwing obsolete weaponry away. North Korea was flying the MIG-15 of first Korean War vintage all the way into the '90s, and may still be keeping them as suicide planes or something. They still have T-34 tanks of World War II vintage in storage, if not second-echelon service.

The SKS served with the Soviet Army in combat support/service support units all the way into the late '70s and possibly early '80s

North Korea still issues SKS rifles to rear echelon elements, regional militia/reserve and police units.

Front line units are armed with AK47/AKMs

SKS' are left over from Russian arms shipments after the Korean War, they never throw anything away.

the NK army has numbers an little else. it's accepted that their equipment is really suffering. I'm always amused when Kim Jung Mentally Il is surrounded by his generals and they've all got a chest of medals,. I'd like to know 'for what?' They haven't forught a battle since 1953. It's notl ike even the cubans who sent troops overseas. They got nothing.

Good behavior
Not catching the clap.
Filling out forms neatly.
Passing Indoctination 101.
Proper use of TP.
Proper shoe shines.
Breathing.

Prior to the overthrow of Saddam the favorite pistol of elite forces and other government leaders in Iraq was the 9mm Browning High Power.

North Korea is no joke. I read an article about the Pentagon running computer simulations of engaging them, and the results weren't looking good for us, especially with their recently acquired neclear capability. They have the capability to level Seoul with conventional artillery without crossing the border, and support their military by selling drugs, counterfeiting U.S money, and selling missiles and CBR warfare materials to terrorists and rogue nations. North Korea and Iran constitute a serious threat to U.S security.

The North Korean Army is at least 4 Million strong. They are definitley a force to be concerned with in a ground war. If they put em all in canoes and sent them across, probably enough could make it here to worry about! Don't under estimate them. They are a ruthless tough military.

They got all those medals for starving millions of thier countrymen to death while they sat in the lap of luxury. Oh and as of today North and South Korea are still technically "at war" there was never a formalized peace treaty only a cessation of armed conflict.

I have read that they have lots of ammo and the means to shell Seoul for many days without stop.

Pretty much if it sparked off over there you would hear the arty from the west coast. They have had 50 odd years to stockpile munitions and make sure they had thier gun lines all nice and pretty. With that nutbag Jong Il at the helm its a certainty that it will go nuclear in a very short order. Unless the Chinese exert some form of pressure on them

The threat North Korea poses has nothing to do with what they could do to South Korea.

There are very good reasons they were grouped with Iran & Iraq as the "axis of evil". And the characterization was excellent.

Can they reach our western coast with their missles yet? I need to read up, I hope we are still working on a missle defense system.

For one thing, they don't have to reach us.

For another, it doesn't have to be "they".

Iraq is out of it. Try an internet search using all the search terms 'iran' "north korea" and 'missile' together.
