Anyone have one of these? This is the model with the ghost ring sights and is supposed to be 99% parts interchangeable with the remington 870. I am also interested in the 98. I am looking for info on these specific shotguns. Thanks.

I have one from about 4 years ago when they were imported by Boland(sp?) Arms or something like that. I got 3 (one for me, one for my dad and one to keep in the boat) from one of the regional chain sporting good stores and paid about $130 each. All three came with 28" ribbed barrel but I had it cut to 19".

IMHO these shotguns are almost as good as my Remington 870. They are very reliable and seems very durable. The action is a bit rough but it has gotten smoother as I shoot it more and the finish has held up just as well as my 870 Express. From my experience it seems that every part of this gun is interchangeable with Rem 870 except the fore stock (needs to be sanded down to work) and barrel. All springs are interchangable for sure as I changed them in mine.

Sigh....

Here we go again. A coupla things...

" Almost as good"? With used 870s being neither rare nor expensive, why not get the real thing instead of a copy, made with no regard for patent nor design rights, made of suspect metal by slave labor in the only major power in the world that remains a complete totalitarian dictatorship?

You might want to note that Com China is the only major power in the world NOT condemning the recent terrorist attacks since 9-11.

Considering the ChiCom track record, want to bet how easy it is to get warranty work done?

I don't care if this copy costs $1.50.

I don't care if all parts are interchangeable.

There's darn little ChiCom stuff in Casa McC, and there will not be.

Hey! Dave's back!

(He took a pass on a few recent 'Should I buy a norinco?' threads)

:D

Mike

PS I agree with him, btw. Why buy a knock off when you can get the real deal? They're NOT expensive, and a used 870 is a better deal than a new Norinco, politics aside.

Agreed on the Norinco, it is cheap. We sell the Ithaca 37 knock off where I work and I've got no good thing to say about it. Occasionally you'll even think the slide release is broken because the action is so hard to open. Plus they recommend that you don't even use steel shot with ours, just to tell you how up to date they are on barrel construction.

I'd recommend doing what these guys said. Even put it on layaway if you come up a few dollors short. In the end you're investing in a much better firearm.

Sincerely,
Adam

Just to stir things up a bit...

Why buy from Remington, who supports silly magazine tube dimples? I'll take the "inferior" Winchester.

Ahh, the anti-Chi Com rant.
Every report I've read from an actual owner of a 98 series shotgun has been extremely positive, including from those who also own an 870. They do not annihilate each other like anti-matter. It would be difficult to build an 870 riotgun in the configuration of the Norinco 982 for the $160 they run at local gunshops. The 98 series with the standard ribbed barrel configuration is less of a bargain compared to a Remington Express.
I already have riot gun, a Beretta 1201FP (made in a country that was formerly an Axis Power, no less), but I considered picking up a 982 as it is cheaper and easier than reconfiguring the 870 express vent rib.
If you want one, buy one.

I'm not about to go digging for the link (too lazy) but according to Remington, the dimples aren't there to restrict higher-capacity magazine extensions, but to properly align the mag follower. Which has two matching grooves in its side.

(just why the follower needs to be at any particular angle is a mystery to me..)

Never heard that before. I wonder if that was a "damage control" statement released after I took my paltry $400 elsewhere.

look what china did to our recon airplane. They
crashed in to it in international airspace.
After reading about all the anti American posts on
chinese web sites after the September 11 attack I
would not buy anything made in that f’ing country.

Dear fellow H P Lovecraft fan. I've put 4-5K rounds through my 870 TB in the last year, and it's just getting nice and smooth.

Put the same amount of rounds through your riceburner and tell me if it holds up. IF it does, I'll shut up, at least about suspect metals.

I will NOT shut up about supporting dictators, slave labor, or paying the salaries of the folks who we'll probably be fighting next.

And why do I think we'll be fighting them next?

Because, as long as America remains a place where dissent is tolerated, and the government(with all its flaws) serves and not rules, their oppression is much less safe for them.

Rant mode off....

I have and like the 870 Express. I think it is the most durable and reliable pump gun on the market. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one to anyone looking for a quality shotgun.

I have also exchanged email with or spoken to several Norinco 982 owners, many of whom own 870s to compare with. Most have fired a couple of thousand rnds through their guns and examined them in side and out. I've handled several examples both gunshows and gunshops. I've even put some slugs through a borrowed one at the range. According to my limited experience and empirical data, it is a well-finished, smooth, reliable weapon based on proven design. I've no evidence to suggest that it will wear more rapidly than an 870, or become unreliable/dangerous due to substandard metallurgy. Norinco is capable of producing well made clones, like the Norinco 1911, SKS, UZI, Tokarev, and AK clones formerly imported. Are some Chinese made guns junk? Definitely. So are some American made guns. Is the 982 as durable as an 870? Maybe so, maybe not. Unfortunately the only one way to find out is for people to buy them and shoot the hell out of them. If they are junk, they'll break. Bad customer service/warrenty repair cures itself, eventually.

I'm not, however, going to use the straw man argument to discourage someone from buying a Norinco 982. If you want one, give it a try.

It's our duty as free informed citizens to debate just these sort of things, to state our positions and to continously evaluate those of our fellow members as well as our own. Dave, I think your opinion is just as important as mine to this process. No need to shut up or stop the rants. Rant away.

The M982 is a shotgun

Wow thanks to the few of you who actually answered my post.

We sent a spy plane into China and got caught. And rightfully so, we are a super power with a strong military. Of couse when and if we catch thier spy planes over U.S. soil we're just gonna wave and wish them a good day. Right? Then we buy 1000's of beret's from China for the army. People got all perturbed and so we ordered new ones from Canada. The Chinese made beret's are sitting in a warehouse never to be used. Yet if China didn't buy products from us, our economy would plunder into recesion. So what does all this have to do with the Norinco 982? Nothing, and that's my point. I asked for reviews of a shotgun.
