Norinco 98

A couple of months ago I picked up a Norinco 98 Shotgun for
my son (He's been wanting a shotgun). The price was right and
it seemed a reasonable copy of the 870. The gun is still tucked
away as a Christmas present but I thought I would do some
research to head off any potential problems. When I tried the
search function I noticed that most comments on this weapon
are along the lines of "I wouldn't buy that communist cr#@".
Since I'm looking for feedback on function and durability (and
what the heck - fun factor), I thought I would appeal to those
of you who have shot or owned one of these. Not looking for
the politics. Thanks for your input.

Good luck on getting any replies w/o any politics.

I'm curious how cheap is cheap on these things, a few days ago my buddy got a Mossy 500 for like 50 bucks. Cheaper than that?

If they're anything like the 1911's they build, you'll be quite happy.

I was looking at a Norinco "870" copy at a nearby gunstore. Seemed OK, and it was $135 used. Parkerized w/ ghost ring sights & an extended mag tube...I wonder if 870 barrels would fit? The copy of the Winchester '97 is nice, too.

I don't think the barrels interchange with the 870. I'm not at
the house right now but I think the magazine is longer than
the Remington - thus the barrel problem. Don't know much
more than that, though. Am curious as to which parts do
interchange... And Bamf, Didn't get quite the deal your buddy
got on that Mossberg :) . I am kinda thinking of picking up
another shotgun for myself in the near future. I'll probably
make that one American to apease the polititians. Shotguns
seem to be the only thing we can buy anymore. Can't buy
from S&W, Can't buy Ruger, S.America finances the drug lords,
Japan, Germany, Italy and Austria were axis. Asia and E.Europe
were / are commies. Colt put non-standard parts in their AR's
so we couldn't use Gov't goodies. Remington has the P.C.
key lock and Winchester makes parts / guns in Japan. Guess
I'll get a Mossberg and start looking for a good used Raven :D !

I'll skip the politics, but one of these new runs just about what a beater 870 that will feed and protect generations of your family w/o glitches will.

If there's anything Americans have done in the sporting arms world that others haven't, it's the way we've made repeating shotguns that last nigh forever and cost less than a week's pay for most folks.

Any of the Big Four will do this, with the slight disclaimer that the Ithaca is a little more expensive. And, parts for the Big Four will be around if needed for longer than one shift of the international trade situation.

Get the clone if you want, and if the "Politics" do not bother you, but IMO, you're not getting the most value for your money.

Thanks for the insight. Since the gun is already purchased I
would like some info on parts interchangability with the 870
and longevity / reliability experiences by owners. Dave, you
bring up a good point about company support and replacement
parts. Next one will probably be American for this reason
(extra barrels to expand versatility is a definite plus for the
US guns). Any experiences by 98 owners are still appreciated.

Fit and finish seemed better than the base model 870. I have no long-term experience with them.

I do have experience with Norinco 1911 clones and would pick them over Colts. Politics...I'll buy a PKM machine gun though I hate the country where it originated. Effective weapons are worth having.

I called a friend who bought a '98. Barrels won't interchange, since the '98 has a longer mag tub.

He says it's a very close clone of the 870, and the few parts he's tried did interchange, BUT it's been a while and he can't remember for sure.

He's entirely satisified with his, and although not up to Remington's standards, it does whatever he needs it to do.
