Wanting another 1911; of the non-Colt manufacturers, which is your choice? (You can shoose your top three.)

If I've missed one, please advise.

My intent is a Commander, or Officers, sized pistol in, likely, "GI" format intially to allow for modification later.

Immaterial to me how much under $1000 the pistol is, a $600 pistol will just get mods sooner than a $900 dollar pistol. More important is intial reliability.

And, yes, Sug Sauer is a typo...it's 4am. lol

I thought the Witness was a CZ75 "clone". Mine is. :)

My stepbrother has an Armscor, my FiL has a Metro Arms, and I have a Tisas. All of them are reliable and accurate. All of them cost less than $400. The Metro Arms has the best sights and prettiest grips. Admittedly my FiL got an insane deal on it: $330 + shipping and FFL (about $380 total).

I voted Remington and Springfield since I have both, along with my old Colt. I've been very satisfied with each one.

I voted for Smith and Wesson. To be specific, I was thinking about the SW1911-E series, or the SC-E. For about $1000 MSRP I'm not sure you can get more for your money. Match-grade barrel, precision skeletonized trigger, Trijicon night sights, over-sized extractor, etc.

Of course, I voted before I saw that you're interested in modifying your new 1911. In that case, the S&W may not be your best choice.

Of the remaining choices, I'd probably go with SA or Ruger.

Ruger makes darned nice 1911s for less than $1000. Many of their SR1911s ape in the $700 range. I have had three of them and all were solid, well built, well performing guns. Great 'entry level' 1911s as far as I'm concerned.

I have both a SA Ultra Compact (3.5") and RIA CS (3.5") .45acp. Both have been excellent and I was surprised by their accuracy. I changed the RIA from a beavertail to G.I. style GS and spur hammer. Replaced the springer MSH with a non-ILS version. The Rock (base model) has the basic low profile black sights and the SA has white dot higher profile sights.

My GI model Rock Island Armory has been totally reliable. They're easily modified. Sometimes they can even be found slightly used for a good margin under $400.

I voted Remington, but I would put Citadel at a close second, based on my experience with them. The commander size Citadel with a rubber Hogue grip was one of my best shooters for SD. A very good friend liked it too, so a few years back he ended up with it as his birthday present. My Remington also has a rubber grip and has been rock stead and reliable as well as very accurate.

I also voted for Springfield & Remington because I have both and like them every bit as much as the colts I cary and shoot.

Well, I bought a Kimber Ultra TLE II Stainless on GB for <$1,000 and it has been spot-on reliable. I like the texturing and the night sights as well. No doubt there's plenty of Kimber-haters on here, but mine work fine.

A Sad Thing

That the Norinco 1911 is banned from importation.
I wonder what they'd go for if the ban was put to bed?
