• Anything ‘published’ on the web is viewed as intellectual property and, regardless of whether it displays a copyright symbol or not, is therefore copyrighted by the originator. The only exception to this is if there is a “free and unrestricted reuse” statement associated with the work.

    In order to protect our members and TFL from possible litigation, all members must abide by the following new rules:

    1. Copying and pasting entire articles from another site to TFL is strictly prohibited. The same applies to articles from print or other media, and to posting photographs taken of copyrighted pages or other media.

    2. Copyright law provides for “fair use” of portions of a copyrighted work. You can copy no more than a SINGLE paragraph from the article to your post (3 or 4 sentences at most).

    3. You must provide a link to the article along with the name of website. For example: ww.xxx.yyy/zzz (The Lower Thumbsuck Daily News).

    4. You must provide, in your own words, a brief summary of the article AND your reasons for believing it will be of interest to TFL members. Failure to do so may result in the thread being closed or your post being deleted as a “cut and paste drive by.”

    5. Photographs and other images are also copyrighted. "Hotlinking" of images (so that it appears in your message) from other sites is also prohibited unless you own rights to the image. If you wish to share an image, provide a clickable link to it.

    Posts that do not follow these new guidelines will be altered or deleted by staff. Members who continue to violate this policy may lose their posting privileges at TFL.

No priviliges to post "For Sale Ads" until "X" number of posts

I know other forums do this, have you considered not allowing new members to post in the for sale section until they attain a certain number of posts? Typically I have seen this number as 50-70. I would think this would limit a lot of scammers.
 
there should be some kind of "reputation" button or something so you could click it. and as a buyer (someone like me, who doesnt want to get scammed) could see who has added to the reputation of this person while checking up on the people clicking the reputation button... that way we can see who trusts this seller, and if the people who are clicking the "rep" button are real. sorry if that doesnt make sense. but in my head it makes perfect sense :D hahaha
 
I like fairview mick's idea. The problem with requiring x posts is that many people, like myself, don't have the experiance to give advise and thankfully have not had any problems with my guns to ask questions about.

Because of this I mostly lurk.

If you want though, I can go around posting things like:

"Glock iz de best man!"
or
"Brand X is better than brand Y by far. A buddy of mine had one and it jammed once."

Basicly you get a bunch of worthless post from someone who doesn't really know anything. :D

maybe they could add some kind of verification of account. like paypal makes you verify the amount they transfered into your bank account before your bank account is active and verified.

maybe tfl could do some sort of information verification through cell phone via text like facebook... not perfect but takes more steps to have a "verified" account; could possibly keep spammers at bay.
 
If you require 50+ posts before listing "for sale" messages, spammers will just post 50 garbage messages first -- all in about 10 seconds. It will take longer than that to clean up the s*** after they leave.

2 weeks membership first before "for sale" privileges might work.

Of course there is nothing stopping them from posting spam in the General forum when the mods are asleep.
 
There are some very good ideas here (like zxcvbob's just above), but for now I don't think the scope of the problem warrants extreme measures be taken by staff. If we get to the point where there are multiple spam messages each day, then maybe. For now, dealing with them on a case-by-case basis seems to work well enough.
 
what ever happened to "trust thy fellow man". I ordered a ($240) powder measure from Harrells, he didn't want any money up front, he said he would box it up and send it. I f like it pay him in whatever form, if not send it back and if I fail to pay "that is an issue between me and the big guy" however, he will continue to conduct business the same way he always has. Trust is a two way street and there are too many ways to circumvent a scam to mention.

I don't think it has anything to do with trust, I think it's just a speed bump to keep the "herbal viagra" (etc) spammers away so the admins don't have to spend so much time deleting stuff and cancelling accounts.
 
actually a really nice feature that has cut down spam and trolls in a mixed martial arts board that i'm on, is an "IP Address check" button. It will list all posters with the same IP address.

Ithink post counts reflect little on a person's character.
I know of a fewinstances on a different forum(I won't mention), of where senior members with hundreds, if not thousands of posts, have burned some people.

I know it's more likely to happen with noobs, but seniority does not come with a gurantee.
