no pinned threads on basics like cleaning guns, hearing protection etc etc

I would say that new people wouldn't join to ask those questions and the forum would dry up

I disagree with the drying up. I think basic questions asked in a forum that encouraged newbies to post, would be welcome, and have no effect on other forums. In fact there is, or used to be a forum for that. Maybe there still is.

In 2004 When I joined TFL I was kind of a gun expert (if there is such a thing) at the very least, I was a "know it all". I've been away from guns for 5+ years. I know little, if anything, about guns, especially striker fired single stacks. Generally, what's new, in gun oils, holsters, accessories, etc.

I've never fired a "click" "bang" and at 80 years of age, as opposed to a young newbie, I'd be very interested. I get to the range at least once a week, and I need all of the current basics to keep things safe...;)

I think TFL is a healthy forum.

But I have been on many forums that have dried up over the years.

The Internet forum is as bout as old as the internet itself.

All the forums I've been a member of were not all gun related, but basically, they treated newbie like dummies, chastised them for asking age old questions and posted numerous stickies.... Then people quit joining , people had no questions to respond to and they failed... Many after being active for several years.

Now some I stay away from because they go unchecked.... FALFILES is rather disturbing at times lol.

TFL is the best forum around, over other subject matter as well.

Ask whatever you want, and there will be no shortage of opinions offered to answer your questions ...... and folks here are generally more polite than some of the other places I've been ...... just sayin' ......

Cleaning guns, hearing protection - that's the last thing I want to read, or would want to read even if I was a new gun owner. If I were all that interested, I'd use the search function. There are plenty of things posted about hearing protection, what oil to use, etc.

This would be like going on a sewing forum and wading through pinned threads on what kind of oil to use on your sewing machine; and what kind of thimbles to use to best protect your finger from pin pricks.

For hearing protection, go to Lowes, Home Depot, or Harbor Freight and get the "premium" yellow ones for $11.

With the popularity of Youtubes now for every subject under the Sun, I see no point in taking up forum space with simple things like cleaning

Why would stickies on the basics be a bad thing? I don't get it. I'm a member on a bunch of forums and most have them. The hunting forum I'm on has stickies on basic hunting stuff for beginners, the truck forum I'm on has stickies on how to oil changes, bolt sizes, tire sizes etc. Not saying it's necessary but it's been useful in my experience and I have used them myself. I find most search functions on forums don't work that great to begin with.

Oh, and It wouldn't have to be on just gun cleaning. It could be on all aspects of gun ownership for new gun owners.
