No need to ship to FFL if in state?????

Yes, it's accurate, at least as far as federal law is concerned. There is no federal law requiring shipment to a FFL for an intrastate (as opposed to interstate) firearm purchase. State laws vary.

THAT SAID...

I would personally be extremely wary about engaging in such a transaction unless the buyer is personally known to me, or a trusted friend can vouch for him/her. Many 14-year-old punks have the Photoshop skills to make a convincing fake photocopy of a state DL or CHL.

Wow, I've never bought or sold online, but always assumed it had to go to an FFL whether in state or out of state. News to me!

For this sale/purchase if it were me I would insist on a sale point half way. Get all the documentation you can and then if you feel comfortable with the sale then proceed. I sold a hand gun face to face had all the proper documentation and the gun was used in NJ in a armed robbery.Guess who LE came looking for yours truly. I was the last known owner according to the 4473's

If it is legal in your state, I do not see the issue of paranoia some seem to have
Guns were sold through magazines and delivered to your door not too long ago
The desire for all of the ID, etc. is not needed in most states

Hmmm never knew that, I ship in my C & R guns across state or in state directly to me via UPS usually but didnt know that could be done.

From BATFE FAQ pages:

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

Not needed true. My question is what would have been the out come for me if I had not gotten any ID. Not needed yes. BUT AS THEY SAY CYA:cool:

Just to clarify and have it spelled out, if I wanted to sell one of my pistols or my shotgun to one of my friends, nothing is required? No registration or no transfer?

As long as he's allowed by law and not disqualified and is living in the same state as you.

Even if it's legal to ship to a non-FFL, you may find it hard to find a shipper to do so. FedEx wants a FFL on the receiving end of any handgun shipment, and depending on who you're dealing with (that is, the individual FedEx employee), you may not even be able to ship a gun to yourself, let alone a random non-FFL.
