no more sierra app

So my sierra reloading app was acting weird, and would not let me access the data even after resintalling and confirming my app subscription. Gave them a call, which was super quick and easy, and the advised the app is discontinued and once the subscription expires, or of you change phones, or reinstall the app, it will no longer work.

Did they offer an explanation as to why? I don't think it would be about money. It must be far cheaper to update an app than to print hard copies. Also, they probably have more revenue from selling hard copies.

I got a new iphone earlier this year, (March IIRC), and it was xferred over from the older iphone. No issues, even when I renewed my sub.

No, they didn't say why, they just said it was discontinued. He was very apologetic about it. I'm guessing $6 a year was cutting into their $40 paper manual sales, but the hard copies are out if stock on their website, and way marked up on Amazon at $56.

Guessing you got in on time, but it will probably stop working when your subscription expires, and you wont be able to renew.

I tried their app & didn't care for it.

$56 for the hard copy Sierra manual is still a good investment in my opinion.

Guess that's why i have 2 editions. :D

True, but i have hard copies 2 lee editions, a speer, lyman, and lyman cast, as well as 2 digital copies, hornadys 10th and 11th. In addition to a digital copy of western, and hodgdons online database, it makes a $56 of sierras manual a hard sell.

I've felt loyal to Sierra since I started loading in the late 1960's.

More than great bullets, they supported US. Their manual has been one of my go-tos.

I hope Sierra is not losing their sense of serving the shooter. I'm not saying they are, but discontinuing a service is not a positive sign.

That would make sense why I noticed they never updated the app with any new load info. I kept waiting and waiting for them to update their app with data with 169 Match Kings they came out with in 2020 and still not on there.

I love the app its quick and easy to use. Im sure they will come out with a new one.

I was very surprised how small the company is. Only has about 140 employees and was sold to a new owner 2017

This is probably the new owner changing things. It takes them a couple of years to fire loads for a new manual, and they don't start until they decide it's getting to be time for a new manual. The exceptions would be for new Sierra products whose weight range wasn't covered by the old data. All the other data wouldn't be updated most years.

Quite a disappoinment to lose my iPad copy. I've kept the icon in place for nostalgia, but I sure miss it. It still works on my Android phone...which I bought and installed after my iPad lost the data.
What I really liked was the infinitely variable load data. Drag the scroller and see how velocity changes by the 0.1gr vs every .4gr or greater in a paper manual. All the other digital load manuals are duplicates of the hard copy...no other app like the Sierra App.

This is strange to hear. Mine has been on my iPad for years, and as of one minute ago it works just as it always has…..

Could be the carrier. I have an iPhone and they don’t do/support gun apps very much.

I had the gunbroker app and it quit working, couldn’t update, etc.

Found out it was the App Store etc that wouldn’t allow it to work.

Not just gun apps. The google play store won't even show the latest version of my movie theater rewards and ticket app even though my phone is two releases of the OS later than the web site says is minimum needed.

So I ended up e-mailing sierra support so ask why the app was going away. No real clear answer.

Honestly, I’ve not heard an official answer yet but I’m hopeful we’ll have a new version someday. Most likely it is a long way out if we do so I’ll be here to help with load data until we can get a new printing made of our reloading manual in page form. Let me know what cartridge you are shooting and I’ll send it.

Barnes, Nosler, and Speer have their Info available free. The powder companies also have it available free. Wonder Why Hornady and Sierra still hold on to selling their data? I know they have to make money, but they should make the money off their bullets. (IMO)

If you email Sierra about a specific bullet in a specific cartridge, they will give you the data for it free. Hornady may as well, though I haven't tried.

I just picked up the manual today at Bi-mart. It was $50. I think this is my 4th Sierra manual now. When the app goes away i will be all set.
