Okay, it's winter in Boston and I'll be going in town at 6:00 for an hour and leave shortly after my class (private lesson). I won't be in school - just a local shopping area, bookstore or mall. I'm female and there's been violent attacks on women lately near the train stations but it's never good at night in Boston. What should I carry for my brief trip in and where? Still no holster and I've got a few revolvers to choose. What would you take with you?

Damn! Poll didn't work. My choices: 60 2" S&W, Lady Smith 36, or SP101 2" DAO. Which would hurt less to shoot in this weather if I had to, control better, and make more sense for a lady to carry with no holster?

The SP101 is a little heavy to tote around but the bobbed hammer should make for a smoother draw than either of the other 2.

Looks like the poll got posted despite the page trouble...:) and yes, I know what you mean, the SP is a heavy gun to carry but if I stick it in my coat, at least it won't snag if I have to draw it. I was torn between this and the LS, but I do love the 60 too. Wish I had a holster.

SP101. I'd hate for the hammer of one of the other choices to snag when you *really* need a quick, smooth draw. ;)

first, if you had to shoot in self defense, you probably wouldn't really be thinking about the relative comfort of firing one or the other. Second, which one of those handguns will best ride inside a coat pocket with your hand resting around the frame?

I voted SP101 only because it's the one that is snag proof for pocket carry RIGHT NOW.Just so you don't get put in this situation again have the hammer bobbed on your favorite(36 or 60) as soon as you can do without it and enough time to wring it out at a range to prove ignition or trade one or the other for a 642 ,649,or other J-frame hammer-less or bodyguard style revolver.YMMV.tom.

It just requires a little extra attention (meaning training) but learn to put your thumb on the hammer during the draw. That removes the chance of the hammer snagging.

I'd put the SP101 in a coat pocket on the strong side, one of the S&Ws in a weak side coat pocket and the remaining revolver in the purse/bag/backpack. The Outlaw Josey Wales would approve.

Spend an extra $15 and get a cheap holster. Why endanger yourself and those around you by having a loose gun getting jostled around in a purse?

Take an extra 10 minutes and some packing tape and affix it in place so you always know where the gun is. It will actually make the gun quicker to get to because you'll KNOW where it's situated.

Your Hands Will Decide.

I have a S&W Model 640. It's the hammerless model 60.

It is one sweet revolver. It is sleek, beautiful, and very accurate within 7 yards. It is not difficult for me to shoot magnums with the gun, but I still load it with .38 +P because I believe two quick shots are better than one magnum, particularly out of a snubby. It's very, very loud with .357 magnum loads as well.

Pack it with two speedloaders or speed strips and you'll be fine. The SP101 should work fine as well, but I am more partial to Smiths. Handle both and see which one you'd like best for your hand.

I also suggest the gun be hammerless. It will ease concealment just a bit and it won't snag, ready to use/draw in an instant.

You oughta take the one you'd most like to carry on a regular basis... Straight to your nearest holser shop and set it up so you can do so. ;)

A word about snubbies!

To become a really competent snubby shooter requires a lot of practice. The smaller sight radius causes some problems for acquiring a good site picture but, with practice, this can be overcome and real competence can be achieved. Having said that, I was faced with eactly the same choice not too long ago (Ruger vs. S&W) and both are really fine handguns. My choice? The Model 60 because it simply felt better in my hand when I held it. FWIW:p
