No guns in toy sets

tatters

New member
I went to a Toys R Us today with my youngest, and I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. NONE of the military or police toy uniform and equipment sets contain guns. I looked at a G.I. toy set and in it was a helmet, an equipment belt, a canteen, and a knife. I looked at the S.W.A.T toy set and pretty much the same deal!!! What was the SWAT guy suppose to do, break down a door and pull his knife on the bg with a 12 ga?
When I was a kid, I had real G.I. toy sets, and that included a toy 1911 as a sidearm.

Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

Good news, though, my 6 yo son has discovered the joys of the cap gun. SNAP, SNAP was heard throughout the garage area.
I have been teaching him gun safety even with these toys, and he seems to get it at even this age.

Ar.com refugee here. Yea, the guy that owns Toys-R-Us is a real active left wing lib, commie, democrat, DNC contributing pig. I refuse to shop there. He thinks it's ok to have ninga stars and violent video games for sale though. give someone else your hard earned buck.

I was not aware of the owner's position.
I will try to avoid the place now that I know. They are quite expensive sometimes, anyway.
That being said..... I am willing to put my own position to the side to see my son's eyes light up when I get him something from there. They have some stuff that you just can't get elsewhere in my area. When he is old enough to understand, I will tell him why his daddy doesn't care to do business there, and will try to find the same or similar product elsewhere first.

Thanks for the info, Gunnutt!

I don't know anything about the companies politics, but the Backward-R-Us in my town has plenty of toy guns for arming your little troopers. I've seen the toy uniform sets that tatters mentions and I can say that the same company also makes the matching G.I. mini M-16 and the cute little S.W.A.T. pump shotgun (sold seperately, batteries not included).

I've noticed that toy guns for kids is a touchy subject that elicits many different opinions around here. Personally, I'd just like to know why they don't make Roy Rodgers six-shooters as nice as they used to. Anyway, I'd look into the politics of your local store manager before we condem the whole chain.

I saw some paint gun pistols in a catalogue the other day that look very real (Beretta 92FS, Glock). I wonder about the wisdom of making toy guns look so real???

Keiller, I have the same reservations about some of the toy guns.
I think what some of you are seeing with Toy's-R-Us stores is a difference in locations and community attitudes. Same goes with Wal-Mart stores. Some carry toy guns while other do not.
I have been seeing a lot of toy guns showing up at gun shows the last few years. Many of which are the high quality toys such as were being made when I was a kid. 'Course the prices are a little higher than they were then. Ouch!
My son has out grown the toy "phase" now since he is 21. His love is for edged weapons instead of guns! :o I think I need to have a long talk with his mother (my ex) and ask if maybe she and the milkman were a little too close 22 years ago. Imagine the Gunslingers son not "into" guns.

Gunslinger,
Have you tried telling your boy that the government believes he's not:
- smart enough to have a gun.
- good enough to have a gun.
- (whatever) enough to have a gun.

You know your boy, I don't. But if I tell my girls they don't "measure up" in some manner, they light up like Rudolph's red nose!

"Oh?" (followed by visual and nearly visible sparks and daggers!)

Telling my kids "You can't" (indicating lack of some ability) appears to be a real motivator!

Maybe your son just hasn't been "awakened" yet. Never know. He still has lots of time to develop all sorts of interests.

Good luck, whatever route you choose.

Dennis, I may have given the impression he was anti in some way, which he is not. He just simply did not develope and interest in guns. I take him to a gun show and he always winds up looking at knives and edged weapons. Go figure. Hence my suspions regarding his mother and the milkman. (Gesting of course ;))
He is at least pro-gun, pro-freedom, pro-constitution. I've told the old "saw" about taking a knife to a gunfight. :D

i thiught my six year old son understood about all guns (to a point) both toys and real. i had not even let toy guns in my house until he was almost six and i could explain to him the dangers of real guns and that it was not a good idea to point even a toy gun at another person unless he intended to kill them. we had several go arounds over this and he was grounded from using his toy guns for several days at least twice for aiming and firing a toy pistol at his sister.
we started working with a .22 Frontier Scout colt pistol about this time and i really wanted this lesson to sink in. now he is shooting a .22 pistol and a single shot .22 rifle weekly and is getting to be quite a good shot.
we were at the grocery store the other day and i noticed him tugging at his pants as though he was uncomfortable. i called him to the bathroom as i suspected what was up. there i found he had a Colt replica cap gun in a holster stuffed in his waistband. he had it just behind the point of his left hip. the same posistion i carry mine. i figured a lesson on permits and the law might be a bit much so i focused on helping him adjust it to keep it concealed and explaining that when we got home he need to put it up. i explained that i was armed and he did not need to carry his toy gun. when we were leaving the bathroom his said " O.K. Dad, but for now I'll cover your back." some things kids do are priceless.

Got my latest Coast Guard GI Joe from Toys-R-US a few weeks ago and it not only came with weapons (12 gage and Beretta M9). the M9 is in Joe's hand and if you move a lever on his back he "Draws Down" on you in a Weaver Stance!

On another website, Kuiper reports that DonR mentioned the site was going down for a while. He didn't say how long or for what though.
