Does anybody know where I can find a long range sight for my enfield? When I got my sporterized enfield it didn't have the longrange sight, only the peep.:(

You're talking about the volley fire sight, the one that was on the left side of the gun, right?

I don't think the No. 4 ever came with the volley fire sight.

That was one of the first things dropped from the previous versions of the gun in the production press of World War I, and I don't think it was ever reintroduced after the war.

I dont know whats it is called. The one that flips up in front of the peep sight, and had the numbers on it. One guy at the gunshop I go it at said that it was missing the long range sight(is it also called a Ladder Sight? )

The Rifle No. 4 came with three types of sights. One is the flip type peep sight, the second is a stamped "ladder type" sight, and the third is a milled "ladder type" with a knurled knob to set elevation. They interchange, one does not go on along with another. The "ladder type" also have a peep sight (battle sight) when the leaf is down. See www.gunpartscorp.com for the last type, they are $20.

The Enfield sight often called the "long range sight" or "volley sight" is a wholly separate arrangement with a dial and a round knob sight on the left side of the foreend, and a peep sight at the rear on the left side of the receiver. These were never used on the Rifle No. 4, and were removed from the older Rifle No. 1 around 1918. I don't think this is what was meant, as you couldn't put one on a short sporter type stock.

What page would I find the Milled "ladder sight" on:confused: Also, is it good? What one would you recommend? Thanks for the all the help.

What you want is the milled ladder sight for the #4. Springfield Sporters has them for $10. I have gotten one from them before and they are in very good to new condition. You will also need the through bolt, the retaining pin a plunger and a plunger spring. Springfield carries all of the parts you need. It should be less that $20 for everything. they don't have a web site. give them a call at 724-254-9173.

I'm not affiliated with them. Just a satisfied customer.

Hi, Jaeger,

If there is any rear sight on that rifle at all, he shouldn't need the pin or the plunger and spring. Those parts are used with any type of sight.

I got an e-mail taking me to task for simplifying the No.4 rear sight business. Actually, Stratton indicates that there are 9 variations of the No. 4 rear sight. There are actually ten, as there are two variations of the flip sight. I saw no reason to go into that kind of detail to respond to the question.

Hi, Molon Labe,

I don't have the page number, as I looked it up on the Gun Parts site www.gunpartscorp.com but it should be in the SMLE section in the book.

True enough. If you have an existing sight on the rifle then you won't need the through bolt, plunger, plunger spring and through bolt retaining pin.

If you are looking to put an "authentic" (proper manufacturer, etc.) ladder sight on the rifle then you will have to ask someone who is up on the minutia of Enfields. I can't help you there. If you just want a good, high quality authentic ladder sight for shooting then contact Springfield Sporters. I'm not into matching codes and all that stuff. I leave that for the collectors. I just like to shoot!
