NM Governor Richardson has signed carry improvements into law

Let's be straight: the only reason that NM even has concealed carry is that Bill Richardson forced it through a recalcitrant legislature. The "usual suspects" had been working on it for years, and getting nowhere (the one time they got anywhere, the antis put a poison pill in the legislation that got it declared unconstitutional).

People may say that Richardson only got the carry legislation passed to secure his NRA A+ rating, but that certainly doesn't change the fact that he was the reason it got through.

This last bill was worked very hard by the NRA-ILA's lobbyist, Tara Mica, and certainly owes a lot to its sponsors.

Yes, though he doesn't use it. The guy is so into doing what it takes to advance himself - he got a lot of ink out of that license.

Anyway, his catering to the gun crowd been to our advantage. I've never voted for him for gov, but he's the only Dem running for president right now for whom I would vote.

Gov. Richardson

doesn't always carry. I expect that many here with permits don't pack 24x7x365, either. Are you going to tar them with the same brush? He's said that he doesn't use his permit because he doesn't need to. Sounds like situational awareness to me.

As a state Governor, he has a security detail that a) obviates his need to be personally armed, and b) probably prefers that he not carry, since his only task in a violent incident is to follow the instructions of his detail, and get to a place of safety as fast as possible. His being armed might well interfere with his security detail's ability to do their jobs, and if they think that's so, he should probably listen to them. They're paid to protect his life at the risk of their own, after all.

His legislative record speaks for itself. The fact that that record conflicts with your image of Democrats, and threatens the Republican party's control of this issue, is your problem, not his.

Maybe your preconceptions aren't the universal truths you thought they were. Maybe Bill Richardson is actually on our side, even though he's a (horrors!!) Democrat. Maybe if more Democratic elected officials thought and acted like he does, our rights would be safer for it. Maybe he should be rewarded for that stance. It's worth a thought.

Well, I don't know where you're getting that I'm unnecessarily down on him: ask I said, he's the only reason that we have concealed carry. I also don't speak about "my image of Democrats," I only say that he's the only one running for whom I'd vote.

You need to read the entire thread before you decide to sound off on me, because you appear to be missing what I'm saying.

Erich -

The guy is so into doing what it takes to advance himself - he got a lot of ink out of that license.

This just fit too well into the "No Democrat really believes in the 2nd Amendment. Any pro-gun thing they say or do is just to get elected so that they can take our rights away" meme that is so often displayed here. I thought that's what you were saying.

As a pro-gun Democrat, I tend to react pretty strongly to that idea whenever it's displayed.

I misinterpreted you. Sorry about that.

Cool, man. :)

He's a politician, that's all I was saying. I didn't want anyone to get the idea that Bill is a big "gun guy" - but I do think he's the most pro-2nd Amendment of any candidate (either R or D) who's thus far raised more than $5M for '08.

In fact . . . you might be interested to know that it was a pro-gun Democrat named Shannon (Robinson) who was the NM Representative that sponsored the main concealed carry bill, again and again, until Big Bill finally bulled it through our legislature. ;)

He's not my rep, but I donated to him.

let's hope the pro-gun democrats in congress prove themselves in the face of HR1022 and assorted other anti-gun bills brought to you by...um....bipartisan sponsors:rolleyes:

when push comes to shove it's party line folks, and Bill, as good as he is, will be drowned in the collective voice of his, um, less pro-gun colleagues. No I'm not a prophet, just speaking from general observation over the last few decades. You are welcome to be a pro-gun democrat, but the party would stab you in the back. Mark my words. You won't be exempt from the laws just because you vote for the party.

the Democrats in NM, like those in WV, in my humble opinion, are the last of the old Democrat party of JFK times. Look around the rest of the country and what the Dem party has become and you wonder why families who were -D for generations are suddenly rethinking who they really support.
