NK missile targeted Hawaii?

I heard that the Japanese have used some method of extrapolation to determine that Kim had his taepodong pointed at Hawaii. I'm just wondering if this is possible. I mean is it possible to determine by altitude, trajectory, attitude, or whatever where this missile was pointed? ERIC

One things for sure, the little fruit loop ain't gonna hit Hawaii anytime soon. I think the best thing to do with that little screwball is keep ONE eye on him but make him think we're ignoring him. Like I said before he's like a 2 year old looking to see how much attention he can get.

Based on trajectory and speed it is possible to get a reasonable idea where a missle might be headed. But, I belive that it requires the missiles be a little bit more of a "know qualntity". Also I know that MIRV warheads can be directed so simple trajectory is not enough. But on simple missiles like NKs i would say it is possible if intel knows a little about them.

Contender, I know what you mean, I'd be way more worried if this guy had somethin besides an 85' pop bottle rocket:D

Determine destination from velocity and tradjectory? Sure, it's pretty easy, as long as it doesn't change course, or blow up. But I doubt he was actually trying to hit them. Eh, they want to secede anyway, let um have it.:p Hmmm if they did it would be bad for our military strength on that side of the planet. If he hit AK and HI and Guam, and Japan, and he managed to get the ChiComs on his side just enough to close off a certain cannal they own...well, it would certainly buy him some time

Like I said before he's like a 2 year old looking to see how much attention he can get.
I'll bet he could get some attention with his million man army. Quick how many troops do we have in the ROK? If you said half what we had a couple years ago, you were right. About 15,000 give or take. The DPRNK has a special forces of over 50,000 (and I hear they're pretty good). Seoul is 25 miles south of the border. The Korean war is NOT over.

Big Ruger,
He had it pointed at water close to Hawaii.
And yeah, it's pretty easy to determine the impact area of an ICBM in flight because they follow a ballistic trajectory.
We use this same principle to locate the source of incoming artillery for counterbattery fire.

Just a little rant, god knows I love this country (least the one it is suppose to be). If the politicians would quit bowing down to all these liberal "americans" (and I use americans reluctantly) and just do what is needed the world would be a little beter off IMO. If we are going to play police to the world lets DO THE JOB - if not pull the millitary from these anti U.S. contries and put them in a protective posture around the U.S. and its TRUE allies (if there really are any). We have the greatest military force in the world and NO ONE could stand the full power if unleashed. How about acting like it. Oh and for the record I would hope the latest from NK would be taken as a direct threat to the U.S. and well screw the UN or whoever else disagrees - we need to take care of Americans - yeah even the liberal ones.

But if he really launched on anything, or even tried to pull off some kind of invasion, it would be over very quick. We don't need 15,000 troops...or 5000 troops for that matter. If he gets really porky, the Tomahawks and F-117s and the B-2s start to fly. And his "million man army" instantly turns into a ghost platoon. Without any heavy weaponry. Remember Desert Storm?

As far as any missiles reaching US soil: Never gonna happen. Remember the Cold War? the Russians had THOUSANDS of missiles pointed at us, and we expected that we could stop almost all of them. How many do you think he has? 1..2...6?

Seriously...I really don't understand how anyone can take the this "tin pot" dictator at all seriously. While the Chinese might be backing him with hardware and such, they'll NEVER back his action in a "shooting war", as they know its not (currently) in their best interests.

Sure, we can afford that:rolleyes: How many wars at a time?

Remember how much money we spent during the cold war on preparedness. We might have about ten anti ICBM missiles in Alaska (the first). Good luck. All the cold war era stuff is in museums. And don't think the Patriots we have in the south or Japan will work for long range missile launch intercept. They might get lucky and wing a few short range if they have the pac3 upgrade. You might be interested to know which ADA unit is on their way to Korea this year. Quick, what unit did the 507th support, then get redesignated into? Quick, who needs millions of dollars (that weren't in the budget) to upgrade to pac3 and reset from OIF (three years ago)?

Well, we were giving them billions of dollars a year. And they spend about 25% of their GNP on their military.

Remember Desert Storm?
Don't even compare, North Korea is the 5th largest military spender. They actually have a real military, with tanks and planes and artillery and what not. And their planes wouldn't be burried in the sand should we come along.

Well, he's crazy and (unlike china) has nothing to lose. Let's just hope China really likes MFN trading.

Actualy Iraq had the worlds fourth(i could be wrong, but it was well inside the top 10) largest military at the time of Desert Storm.

I believe most of thier airforce fled to Iran after a few short engagements. They had an exagerated 545,000 troops. A lot of which fled or surrendered (or never existed). And we had 550,000 + a few hundred thousand alies (remember those?). And we spent billions of dollars bombing the sandflies out of them before we even thought about starting a ground war.

Did that piece of junk stay in the air long enough to plot the trajectory?

I saw on the Discovery Channel that we are working on a large chemical laser weapon that is mounted in a 747. According to them, it is designed to shoot down ballistic missile in their boost phase and has a range of 200 miles. The laser is in a non-visible spectrum, so it will not be seen by the naked eye. I've got to wonder if we didn't use th N.K. test shot for a test shot of our own.:)

Oh he was only shooting close to Hawaii? Well now Slash that'll be a real comfort to the folks there if he ever does decide to top one with a nuke and shoot it "close by" wont it? Jeez you can kill someone with a grenade and not actually hit them with it.

Take this as fact, he launches anything that has a radiation signature, and South Korea will be an island.

We have sensors that routinely stop people who have had radiation therapy from entering buildings and tunnels. We have sensors that can ID cesium 137 generators from space with no problem, do you really think they are going to be able to load a enriched plutonium warhead on an above ground missile from a static launcher and get it off with out us reacting.....Much Ado About Nothing.

Where are you on Ft. Blistered? I was there some time ago; in both IHAWK and CHAPARRAL units. (There, I dated myself!)

No attribution other than AP. It was in a local paper. Thats why I asked, I had not heard this elsewhere. That does'nt really mean much as I can sometimes be a day or two behind on news due to my job.
