I am looking at either the Nikon Prostaff Rifle vs Nikon Prostaff Shotgun scope. Either one is in 2.7x 30 or 32 for rifle Any thoughts as to which one would be better?

Well the rifle scope has a Parallax Setting: at 100yds the shot gun scope has Parallax Setting: at 75yds. Shotgun scope has Nikon's BDC 200 Reticle: Designed for use with aerodynamic polymer-tipped slugs and muzzle velocities of 1900-2000 fps........need I say more:)

Nikon/336

What is the caliber of your 336 and how do the ballistics of your intended ammo choice compare with the shotgun ammo ballistics? If not too different, and your preferred max range is not exceeding that of the SG, then it might be a toss-up.

Personally I wouldn't buy any Prostaff, I'd look for a Buckmaster if you want Nikon at a minimum. In most cases for around $20 more you can get a VX1 Leupold which is a much better scope than the Prostaff. Nikon makes great glass, they just.don't use it in the Prostaff.

Per the paperwork that comes with the the 2x7 has a 75 yard paralax. the 4x is set at 50 yards and the 3x9 at 100 yards. I have all three and think they are excellent scopes for the price.

When I bought my 2x7 it cost $130. The Leupold 2x7 was near $200 at the time. I am not sure of the price spread between the Buckmaster and the VX-1. The Prostaff 2x7 I have is mounted on my Marlin 336 in 30-30. Works great.

And as Bob Milek use to point out as long as you are directly behind the scope and not off to the side a little there is no parallax.

What I've heard is that the Buckmaster is now mass produced in China and is not the scope it used to be.... While the Prostaff has been upgraded and is now a higher grade scope in the Nikon lineup. They also have a Prostaff 5, which costs quite a bit more.

I just took delivery of a brand new Prostaff and am amazed how much light it draws in. I was testing it out at dusk the other night and it was almost as if someone turned the lights on.
