Nikon Monarch X Scope

sort of

Let me start by saying I do not own nor shot the scope, but.......

I was interested in this scope after reading a write up on line, I think in Sniper Country, but not sure. Wanted the item as an F-TR-class competition scope for on my Savage .308 for across the course and 1000 yd FTR matches.

Ran across one at a store in Tupelo MS (the 4-16x, mildot model) and looked it over pretty good.

The optical qualities seemed very high. My first glance through it resulted in a very high "wow" factor. Bright and clear to the extreme. The article made much of the distinct clicks and their positive feel. I clicked it quite a bit and have to agree.

The store's price was $999.99. I went home and online searched and found them at,about $800 plus, somewhere, maybe cajun optics or something like that. If I found it, you can.

I asked questions of FTR shooting friends, they are Leu and Nightforce guys and did not have much to say either way on the Nikon. They did pose a question about warranty and repair that's worth considering. Where do you send a Nikon if it goes bad?????? Back to Nippon? I don't know.

I was advised that more than 16x was recommended for 1000 yd matches.
I had read that 12X was minimum, but these guys are pretty accomplished and I tend to trust their judgment.

The final strike for me at the time was that w/ some research, I learned that the Nikon X only had 50 minutes of adjustment. In the 1000 yard world that's not much. With a 30mm tube that's marginal. My rifle (in .308) needs 35-38 minutes to come up from 100, depending on the conditions and the range (as in location) where I am. That doesn't leave much, and even less in windage the further "up" you get. Fifty minutes is way less than (nearly half) of what scopes in the same class w/ 30 mm tube, $1000 plus price range generally get. You might not get "on" at 1000 w/o a tapered base, depending on how much elevation you needed to get your initial 100-600 zero.

So that nixed it for me and I went w/ something else. All that to finally say this......the Nikon seemed otherwise to be a great item. I figured w/ a 20 degree base I could reach 1000 easy, liked the clicks, and the optics seemed super. Figured I could live w/ 16x and would not shoot at 1000 THAT much, etc. But I could not get the guy locally to budge on price, and I got a better deal on a scope that offered 90 minutes of adjustment, w/ 24x, at about $800 somewhere else, so I went w/ choice B instead. (burris xtr)

If I wasn't hung up on more adjustment and magnification, and didn't intend to shoot out to 1000 now and again, I would have bought the Nikon X, online for around $800, but in the end it didn't offer the features I believed I needed and I found an optic that did for a similar price.

On dogs and chucks at the usual ranges, and competition to 600-800 yds, it might be good for you, and would suit me, I really did like it, but feature wise did not fill the bill for my intended use.
