Night Vision Scopes

I'm thinking of buying an ATN 1st Gen. weapon sight. Does anyone have any experience with these? What kind of realistic recognition range should I expect? I'll probably get a 2nd Gen later but am wanting to get my feet wet first. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. There isn't much info out there on night vision. Thanks .:)
 
You won't be happy with 1st generation NV. The magnification of a scope makes 1st gen even worst. You'll need an IR illuminator, also.

I started off with a 2nd gen + scope and wasn't even happy with that so I bought 3rd gen NV. I wasted a lot of money trying to get by a little cheaper. You should put the money you were going to spend on the gen 1 scope towards something better.

Also, ATN aint that great either.
 
with any night vision i would advise just getting an ir laser as your not going to be happy with mounting the device on the weapon itself
 
I have a 2nd gen atn scope

I have a 2nd gen scope for hunting coyote. reasonable range with the built in IR flashlight, maybe 50 yrds. if it is a clear night you can see for several hundred yards. I havent played with any of the newer generation scopes, but i would say if it is for hunting get a IR spotlight they make it a lot easier to hunt.

For the most part the scope is never on the riffle. (it is bad to use them if there is light out) so it sits in my safe until i got hunting again and have to sight it in again. Kind of a waste but i like to kill the little dogs. so it has been worth it for me.

My scope did die on me once, i had to send it to ATN. they rebuilt it free of charge and payed for shipping both ways. there customer service was top notch in my opinion. But that was 4 or 5 years ago and that could have changed.

Now if they start selling thermal sights at reasonable prices soon i will be very happy.

I am at work right now so i cant look at it and give you the model number. I will edit this post later to include it.

The 50 yard range is what the IR attached flash light will illuminate. If you can find a larger/better light it would be the same distance you can see with a good flashlight. This is on a moonless night with no background light. if the stars are out you can see about as good as you can in the day time. just looks a little fuzzier and you have to constantly adjust the focus. It is like a really nice camera, when the lenses are focused right you can see a lot of detail. When it isn't in focus you cant tell if you are looking at a a tree or a truck.

Again this is with 5 - 6 year old (2nd gen just came out to civilians) tech. and newer innovations could very well have eliminated the things i point out.

If i had the chance to go back to the day i bought it i still would, i have had a lot of fun hunting coyote and rabbits with it. but i will not buy another one. I am waiting for thermal sights to come down in price. A nice 3rd gen scope will run you 4k + a thermal sight will run you 10k. i would save up for the thermal sight.
 
I picked up an ATN 1st Gen scope for 20 dollars, much more and it would not have been worth it. YMMV

I also have a refurbed AN/PVS2 whis works fine out to 100yds or so as long as there is some decent ambient light (moon/stars). The distance drops quickly on those pitch black/cloudy nights. And it is big.

Well it came today. Very nice looking well built unit. I took it outside just a while ago and I'm not really impressed. Without the IR illuminator it's fairly useless. With the illuminator it works to about 50 yards, not really clear but usable. Thats with a half moon directly overhead. I'm going to send it back and keep shopping.
