My father is looking for a night vision scope for varmint controle on his ranch. He is looking in the $1,500.00 range but since I will do the shopping I am willing to add $1,000.00 to the project (he does not need to know). He asked me to help in selecting one because I have some experience with night vision, I have a PVS-7 and once owned a PVS-4 but I don't know what to tell him. The PVS-4 would be too large for what he wants, it would not do well behind the truck seat. As of yet there is not a rifle dedicated to the task, I have a friend with a small martini action in .357 that I may try to purchase for the job, it has had a broken stock for years and the current owner is not in any hurry to fix it. I say this because my father will not likely have hearing protection with him when he needs it. I figure that a suitable hand load will do the job and not be so hard on the ears. I am looking for opinions on both the scope (primarily) and the rifle. The targets are likely to be medium to large dogs at no more than 100-150 yards.
