does anybody know how much night vision goggles cost?

i live right next to a big open field that has a whole buncha cows and stuff and I thought it would be cool if one day i ventured deep into the unknown with some night vision goggles and a bb gun.

How much money do you have? The more you spend, the happier you'll be.

The cheap Russian Gen1 goggles, all basically the same, go for between $400-600, depending on how well you shop around. This is all I can afford, unfortunately.

A decent pair of used American dual-tube AN/PVS-5 Gen2 go for around $900.

A new pair of single-tube AN/PVS-7B, Gen3, anywhere from $1500-$3000, depending upon tube grade.

And a pair of AN/PVS-15 dual-tube Gen3 goggles, water-proof to 60 feet, what the SEALs use, about the price of a new Ford Escort.

I've read that a Gen4 tube has been released--anything with them is probably the price of a new Mercedes. ;)

eBay is a good place to find bargains. If you do a search on Google you'll find a bunch of info on night vision.

those goggles are expensive. but i guess they are all worth it in the end.

are night visions binoculars battery operated? or are they solar powered by the moon?

NVG's

When I was in Italy I got to see some of the new ones the Marine FAST Teams are using. I have no idea what gen they are (5, maybe 6?) but they look like you are looking thru a crapy pair of sunglasses. The color distrotion is a gery green color, but most importantly, you can see colors and you have depth perception. They are a binocular design and are totally hands free.

Anyone else have info on these?

WOO HOO!!!!!! big break.

went down to the department store yesterday just to take a look at some night vision. turned out, due to low demand the goggles that cost $299.99 was sold to me for only $99. there were only a couple of starlight sets out and they wanted to get rid of them so they sold them to me for at a dirtcheap price.

i recommend night vision for any of you outdoor types. it gives you a confidence that is undescribable.

health hazard...

Be careful out there...

I read that the 3rd gen NVG's are hazardous
to the wearer, if worn more than (some short
period of time).

Sorry to be so vague..., I wish I still had
the article...

The basic problem is that there's some sort
of radiation that is hazardous for your
eyeballs.

I think I actually read about it in
The Firing Line, a year or so ago. Some
ex-military type confirmed that with the
early NVG's, they were keeping track of
how much they wear them, and weren't to
exceed some relatively low threshold.

ooops... my bad. i meant they sold my a night vision monocular, not goggles, for $99 dollars.

it is a 900 gain, 2 X 5 magnifier with a built in infrared flashlight.

and I don't know if they have any more for $99 dollars at Big 5. I mean, I bought it on July 4 th if that means anything.

When Russian NV first hit the market many units were shipped with IR laser illuminators, which can easily damage your eyesight if you look at it (directly, not "through" the NVD).

The radiation scare was something about how the glass in the Russian tubes was radioactive (sure) and would release X-rays when the light photons bombarded it. All cathode ray tubes, even your friendly TV, can emit x-rays if the voltage is tweaked too high. Personally I think this one was put forth by the American manufacturers to scare people from buying Russian. I don't know why, because if you can afford American-made GenII or III, why the hell would you buy Russian GenI?

Since I've been using a Russian monocular for two years now, I guess there's a tumor growing in my
brain. That explains it! :D
