Night sights anybody?

I have been considering a new set of sights for my Para-Ordance P-13. I have no experience with night sights and was wondering if they were worth it. Any advice and opinions will be greatly apperciated.

Thanx in advance.

good shootin

The only night-sighted gun I've got is a S&W 1066 I got used. As a result, I suspect that the sights are somewhat dimmer than originally supplied due to age. I'm not sure, I haven't compared them side by side with another, younger set.

That being said, if it's dark enough to see the night sights, it's MUCH too dark to identify the target. But I can see the "Landing lights" on this gun across the room in the dark, which is probably a good thing if you need to find it in a hurry with bleary eyes. So long as you take the time to make sure of your target before you shoot it....

They are a good idea...

In my opinion they are a great idea for a carry/defensive pistol. Wifey bought me a set of Heinie Straight Eights for my last birthday and I really like them a lot. As the previous post suggests they are of little value without a good flashlight to positively identify your target in total darkness. Where they shine (no pun intended) is in low light situations.

Up until last year I didn't own a handgun with any type of night sights. Today I would never opt for a carry gun without them. That's just my opinion.
Good luck, Jack

I have (2) guns with night sites: my Kimber Ultra CDP came with them, prior to that acquisition I had MMC to a custom installation of their adjustable sights with Tritium inserts on my carry Makarov.

I like them for a carry gun, they would be a waste (IMO) on a range gun. Also, I had MMC put red dots in my rear sight & a green up front, if I had it to do all over again I would get all green as it is brighter. Maybe a bar-dot set up or something, but they would be all green as they are on my CDP.

You should be able (I would think) to get sights that will mount in your Para slide - assuming Para uses a dovetail set-up? The slide of my Mak had to be machined to accept the MMC front & rear sights - that was an expensive project, but I still think it was worth it.

To each his own but I can tell you from experience that a good set of nightsights on your primary carry gun can be an asset. You'd be surprised at how hard it can be to find that front sight in the dark or extreme low light situations. With the nightsights, you can acquire the front sight, place it on your target ready to fire. You will be more sure of your actual aim and perhaps, you will save precious seconds trying to aim in a life threatening occurance.

Do your homework and get good quality nightsights. You will spend a few more dollars but you will glad you did in the long run. Do a search on the site for more info on specific brands. Weigh the pros and cons and make a purchase. Have a reputable smith do the installation to be sure they are installed correctly.

Hope this helps.
Best,

Being a "vampire" I'm out and about mostly at night. Night sights on my carry gun are a must. I use Trijicons. hey are the best IMHO!!!

Trijicon http://www.trijicon-inc.com/

They charge $30 for installation and to ship your slide back to you. I shipped one to them on a Monday and got it back the next Monday. I shipped another one on a Tuesday and got it back Friday of the same week.

I've got Meprolights on my new Kimber Pro Eclipse and, compared to the Trijicons, the Meprolights look like crap.

They seem to have helped my shooting for some reason.

Good luck.

I really like nite sights but to be honest, I doubt their utility in a real gun fight. I suspect in the heat of the moment, very few will actually use or even attempt to use their sights. Every video I have seen of actual gun fights leads me to believe that point shooting is the rule rather than the exception. The nite sights are great for the yearly night time qualification though.:)

I bought a LNIB 3953 with Novak/Trijicons on it...the are from 1994 and are still plenty bright. I just got a set of Meprolights on my K40 and I am impressed with them too....Both are the best you can buy..the Trijicons may have the edge..but both have a 12 years warranty and a 15 year 1/2 life....I wont complain either way.....And Nights are a must on a CCW, my eyes are pretty good but when I am tired they arent that great...in darker situations..even indoor ranges..they help with sight acquisition alot. Just my 2.35894 cents....
Shoot well

1redneck, highly recommended. It may be dark and scary if you need to use it instead of bright and sunny at the square range.

I like (don't tell Les Baer) yellow in back and green up front to forestall the possibility of having the weapon out of index. I love those MMC sights that Cylinder & Slide puts on his 1911s. My first C&S 1911 wears those. You may want to check those out. YMMV.

Yes, yes, I know. I'm going to get PM after PM saying that "experiments in the Terminator" and "at the range you will need it."

All well and good and I bow before the Wise Man in Tejas. However, I may need to place the shot very accurately for a variety of reasons. (Kirk, you're so close you can't miss. You mean I can't afford to miss! Careful.).

Another point that I hadn't considered until Mas pointed it out. When you wake up because someone doesn't sound right, the night sights act as airport lights allowing you to index your hand to the weapon.

As always, Rule #4 applies, even in the dark when no one is watching.:D

Greyhound, my partner in crime, er, I mean training, loves the big dot sights. They are dead on his Glock 30s until about 16-17 yards.

John sez when he first got `em he had trouble because he was lifting the snout of the weapon up to see that big sight. He was shooting high for some reason. Hmmmm. He now understands their ways.

It's what you train with, no magic sword, blah, blah, blah. . . . .

I prefer the Trijicons to Meprolight. The Trijicons are sharper, a bit smaller and better finished. The Meprolights, while bright and reliable are too chunky to my taste.
