NICS check...without the paperwork?

I've got two friends that may want to buy a handgun. Both have been arrested in the past however and aren't sure if they are 'legal' or not. Neither are felons.

Some way to check their status online before buying?
 
If not convicted of a felony, probably are good to go.....If you're an FFL, attempt to sell him or them your gun, personal one, and if it floats, they should be OK..not sure what else to suggest without scratching my head a little....
 
Were they convicted of anything? I can't remember the questions asked on the 4473 where you have to answer yes or no, but any yes answer other than for the first question will be a problem. Form 4473 has lots of fine print in its pages discussing legalities; the answer may be on the form itself. BATF website may be of some help.
 
Being convicted of a felony--convicted, not just charged--is a definite disqualifier. Being convicted of a misdemeanor is no big deal. I had a misdemeanor conviction in 1973 and still got a pistol permit in 1991 with no problem. In New York State, no less:eek:
