Nickel M58

ACP230

I ran across a nickeled four-inch Smith M58, .41 Magnum at the Cabela's in Dundee, MI, last Saturday. I didn't even see the rest of the store since after I saw it I stayed in The Gun Library and began negotiations. I got the nickeled M58 for the same price as a blued one I looked at hard several years ago in a store on the other end of the state.

It is a good looking gun that locks up tight and appears to have been shot very little. It came with Pachmayr "Gripper" grips which I like and have on my M57.

The double action trigger pull is heavy and not as good as the one on my M57. The single action pull is all old Smith & Wesson probably about three pounds. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, maybe later this week.

I have two Ruger Rehawks in .41 Magnum, a Smith M57 six inch blued gun. I was looking for a four-inch .41 and a nickled one, so I'm a happy man tonight.

Congrat's there ACP230! What a great find, as the Smith
& Wesson model 58's are highly sought after in these
parts of ole' DixieLand. I haven't seen a factory finish
nickeled one in many years. Enjoy-

The .41 magnum is a great caliber for handloading. As
my very first large bore handgun, I saw the need cost
wise to invest in loading equipment; so I purchased
the RCBS "Jr." press, dies, and accessories. My first
load data was from a Sierra Handloader's Manual
and it called for a 170 grain Sierra JHC, with W-W
630P powder, charge (unknown), and suggested
that is was moving out at around 1300 fps. What
a muzzle flash, in the dark of night!

Now days, I use the RCBS "Rockchucker" for all my
handloading chores.

Really like those 58's. I've got a couple right now, and wouldn't mind picking up a few more. I just can't find many out there at a good price.

I am still kicking myself for passing on a NIB nickeled M58 about 20 years ago. Have a well-worn blued one that was a police trade in, but I sure wish I had that shiny one.

Good catch. I stopped in that store last year....it's an awesome place with a very nice collection of used firearms.

Ditto what Atticus said. I didn't even know the 58 came in nickel. I thought you had to move up to the 57 to get anything other than blue.
