NIB S&W 586 find

I hadn’t made my usual gun store/pawn shop rounds in a while. So this week I stopped at the LGS and browsed the used gun cabinet, lots of stuff since last visit. Then it immediately caught my eye, very nice S&W revolver. On closer look, it’s a very clean 586. I asked to see it, well once it touched it I couldn’t let go. Turns out it had only been the cabinet less than 2 1/2 hours. Out comes the plastic and ID.

S&W 586 no dash
Dob ~ 1982
6” bbl
Only factory fired
Original stocks
Box
Papers
No tools

I have two others just like it, both shooters, so it will have a place in the safe with the LNIB model 27-2.

Very nice..... Does it have the "M" stamped near the number on the crane? If not you may want to get the modification done if you plan to shoot it. The mod changes the Firing pin bushing.

Two things re: the "M" stamp...

  • The reason for the "M" stamp recall was that a few early L frames were produced with an oversize hole in the firing pin bushing, which can cause the primer to backflow into the space between the bushing and the pin. However, not every gun has the problem. If it works OK without the recall, the gun may be fine. Some shooters have used non-recalled early L frames for years without problems.
  • S&W reportedly stopped "M"-stamping recalled L frames recently. If you find a non-stamped no-dash L frame, call S&W customer service and ask; it's possible that the gun has already been recalled.

just got my 686 no dash back after 7-10 days..
for the L frame mod.. or M mod..

the crane was lightly stamped M..

fantastic customer service..
makes me glad that i own more than one :)

It does not have the "M" stamp. It will not go back for the mod because it's not going to be a shooter, only a safe queen.

I have two just like it, one LNIB and one that was the second gun i bought in my buying adventures over 22 years ago. It's a nice accurate shooter.

Then too, there are soooo many other shooters to pick from
