NGD & Range Report: H/K VP9

Over the weekend, I acquired a H/K VP9. Striker-fired 9mm with 15+1 capacity. I LOVE this firearm. Crazy accurate right out of the box.

Here is my first magazine (15 rounds) from 15 yards...

And here is my second magazine (15 rounds) from 15 yards after I adjusted my grip as I have been shooting 1911's and revolvers for a while...

I've put 400 rounds of Winchester white box 9mm through it, and have had zero malfunctions, misfires, or anything like that. If you're looking for a striker-fired 9mm, I can highly recommend the H/K VP9 to you. It's an amazing firearm.

yup.

mine chewed thru 300+ rounds of factory and hand loaded stuff, cast lead, ball, HP, ate it all, didn't even burp.

great pistol.

Good choice. I've been singing the praises of the VP9 for a while now as well. Mine is great.

I recently picked up the Sig P320 both full-size and compact models. I'm working on getting used to those right now in preparation I'd doing a proper head to head comparison. I'm really liking it so far. Both guns have done features I like over the other so choosing a winner will be difficult at best.

Is there ever a "winner"? You and I both own multiple striker fired handguns from different manufacturers. If there was one that was better than the other, wouldn't we just own one model from one manufacturer, and maybe multiples of that model? Every design has its own advantages as you said. I find it frankly unnecessary to declare a winner either way. You could maybe compare individual features, but even then it's very subjective.

JSMidd for some reason your pics didn't come through. I think you forgot the links.

Edit: weird the pics show on tapatalk but not my browser. Anyway ignore my comment above.

Dang... I was pretty set on the CZ P-09 for my first 9mm but those are some NICE groups...

Decisions decisions.

Great post and congrats on your new gun!

My VP9 is my favorite current carry pistol. Love the VP9. I can't find a single thing I don't like about the pistol. Excellent shooter.

Mine is crazy accurate as well, meaning that it took no real practice or adjustment for me to shoot it well. I bought the gun new. Put ten rounds through it shooting at close range targets - found it be very accurate. Sometime later, my son put another twenty rounds through it shooting at the same close range targets - his comment was that it was accurate.

I then went night varmint hunting. Shot another four or five rounds through it, bagging three varmints from some pretty good ranges. Total money. I was really impressed.

Bottom line, thirty five rounds or so into a brand new pistol, and I completely trust it for ranch (and any other) duty. I bet that I can duplicate those groups and raise you some.

Had an opportunity to shoot a new VP-9 side by side with a Wilson Combat Beretta 92G. (yes I know apples and oranges)

First let me state that I tend to like Beretta's, and I'm not crazy about striker fired guns.

The VP-9 shot circles around the Wilson Beretta. Much better groups out of the H&K.

Three of us shot both guns with the same results and all favored the VP-9.

IMO, the H&K is the best striker fired gun I've ever shot .

Guns such as the VP9 and PPQ have revolutionized affordable strikers. The standards of performance have been raised, but not at massive cost. The VP9 has no doubt been influential in HK lowering the prices of some of their other models recently. It keeps 'em honest!

The VP9 and PPQ are like distant cousins, it's really hard to choose between them.

No, but having their stock downgraded by Moody's a second time over fear that they don't have enough cash on hand to make their liability payments definitely encouraged them to move product.

That is probably true for most, but not for me. I wanted in the biggest way to get the VP9. I shoot an HK 45C, totally love it, and REALLY wanted to have the VP9 as its companion. But the trigger pinch, bite, sting, or whatever you want to call it would not let me get it. Using a friend's new VP9, I tried different grip positions and different grip panels, but the pain was always there.

Off topic, but I finally tried a PPQ and had NO trigger pain ever with it. So I bought one (the M1 Classic version) and totally love it. But I still wish the VP9 had worked for me.

Pinch and sting aren't the same thing. The trigger on the VP9 does go into the bottom of the trigger guard and I could see where you might get some pinch. I haven't had that issue nor have I heard of it with the VP9 before, but not every gun works for every person. The PPQ is great too.

Trigger safety sting-VP9

Hi guys,
I am proud owner of a VP9 since February, love it !
My VP9 had still the pointy bit from ejection molding stuck on the trigger safety. It was very small, but I definitely felt the sting.I removed it with a needle file and some fine grit sandpaper.
Called my friend in Germany who is working at H&K and he said there was a small batch of trigger safety's that slipped through their quality control.

BTW if people are still looking for VP9 Mag's ,HK often has some in stock ,but not posted on the website.

Wow, that's good to know. And it's great you know someone "inside" at H&K.

After what you said, I think I will try to shoot other VP9s I might come across to see if they don't bite. I would have loved to just do a little filing to make things right, but I wasn't going to risk spending $600 and still having the problem.

I have the Walther PPQ M1 9mm nice shooting and great trigger also feels good in my hand.
After reading about the new HK VP9 I picked one up,nice shooting great trigger feels good in my hand.

The VP9 with the longer bbl. has less flip, and I shot better groups for me with the VP9 then my PPQ shooting them both side by side.

Both are quality of build and finish, but the VP9 has a all steel recoil spring Assy. the PPQ has a non metal guide rod and non metal spring retaining end caps, that have failed a few times.

I was first looking at the new Sig 320 9mm striker fired handgun, but I feel the HK VP9 is a much better choice.

I have not fired as many rounds as other forum members, but I have had no failures and the slide always locked back after the last round fired.
I don't know about any trigger finger getting pinched, since I always wear gloves at range.

Just glad I bought the HK VP9.:)

I totally understand ,Lou. I'm a Tool & Die maker which helped seeing and fixing the problem.
