Next rifle purchase, something in the .400 caliber range.....

So, I don't have a lot of firearms in general, but I'm building. I have an M&P 15/22 - Mini 14, and Savage Model 10 in .308. I think the next rifle should be in the .40 caliber arena. To top it off I'm looking for a lever action as I think they're just awesome.

To add to it I've wanted a 45/70 Marlin for a bit now, but the wrench gets thrown in as I wonder if I should get something in SS to match my Ruger NM Vaquero in 45 Colt?

Use of the rife? I won't hunt with it every year, but taking it on hunting trips would be fun. Hog, maybe deer, I'd like to do a bear hunt some day. All kinds of game I'd love to go after at some point in life. I'd like it to look pretty (to me) so SS with Walnut or something and I can get my Ruger grips to match.

Opinions please!

Thanks all!

I would get something in leveraction in the 45LC to match your NV. You pretty much HAVE to have a levergun chamber in the same round as your cowboys revolvers.

If you get the 45-70, you could always get a BFR somewhere down the road. Heck of a revolver. Shoots like a laser, and could probably bring down any animal alive. If I had a time machine, I'd probably go back in time and use mine to hunt dinosaurs.

Anyway, I cast my vote for the Marlin 1895. Everyone should have one, best bear medicine there is for the money, imo. If you want a big lever action that's the way to go.

I do go back and forth on the 24" or 18" barrel.....hmmm

Well, what matter for accuracy is sight radius (distance between the front sight and the rear sight). The Marlin is a great gun to put any kind of reviver mounted iron sight, buckhorn sight, or especially aperture sight on. Already drilled and tapped, just screw them down, sight them in, and you're good to go.

With the rear sight right up close to your eye, and the front sight down at the end of the barrel you'll have more sight radius with the aftermarket sights on the 18in than you would on a stock 24in.

I really like one of the sets Skinner Sights makes.

Have a set on my 1895, wouldn't ever take them off.

If you are looking for a vintage rifle cartridge, and want to stay with the theme of late 1800s pistol-cartridge firearms, I would propose a Winchester 1892. If you want a period rifle cartridge long arm, look at an 1894 or 1885 rifle.

But I suspect what you are really looking for is a square-bridge 98 Mauser in 404 Jeffreys for some relaxing shooting.:D

They are on the heavy side, even the guide gun. I don't see much use for the longer barrel, other than a little extra magazine capacity.

How about a Ruger #1 in .45-70 with Skinner peep?
