So i have the itch again to purchase another rifle. Problem is what caliber. I currently own 17hmr, 22lr, 5.56 ,7.62x39 ,7.62x54r, 270wsm, 308, and 450 marlin. My thought is to trade in the 450 marlin on a 375h&h. The 450 marlin is a good cartridge but hard to find and the 375h&h will handle anything the 450 would. Does this sound sensible or do you think i should keep the 450 and get something like a 338? Basically im looking to fill a void between 308 and 450. Any input?

Go for the 375 H&H, you will love it. It will handle far more than the 450 Marlin ever thought of handling, and in a nicer-shooting package. A 375 H&H has a trajectory very close to a 30-06, so you can really reach out there if you want to.

That was what drew me to the 375h&h the trajectory. I shoot 308 alot and they are very similar out to a couple hundred yards. That 450 drops like a rock.

The .450 if heavily loaded is at least as good as the .375 H&H for up close encounters. It hits a heavier punch and is quicker handling as well. It's not as versatile, but that's why you have a number of different firearm packages-- to maximize the use of each.

I would recommend a .338-06 to fill the gap. If you handload, brass (30-06) is cheap and lots of bullets and powders to choose from. The rifle can be a pound or two lighter than a .375 and still give less recoil, and cost much less to shoot, while still giving great ballistics.

Everyone needs a good medium-bore.

I would think the 375 would be just as hard to find as the 450 marlin. if I already had those calibers I would probably either sell the 450 and get a 300 win mag or finish out the rusky rounds and get a 5.45x39

If it were me there would be a big it depends, based on a few variables.

If side by side. I would pick a .416 Rigby with a very generous recoil pad.

Single shot like a TC Encore I would if it were that light probably stick with .450 Marlin.

Now that said .375 H&H I am sure is a fine round. I have no experince with it. Clsoest experince I have is shooting grampa's .475 H&H side by side once. That was 23 years ago. It resides in a safe. I have not shot it since.
