Hello,

this is Wisent from Germany, I am an avid hunter, especially roe and red deer but also wild boars and red fox ( above all in winter because of the fur).
I#m a rifle and handgun enthusiast and a collector of handmade custom hunting knives.
My dream was to hunt in Africa and Asutralia but being handicapped from birth on I am reduced to hunting from a stand, perhaps I'll get the chance to hunt in scotland on red deer.
Since I fell ill with arthritis at the moment, I'm just posting and dreaming about hunting . In Germany we have roe season now and it hurts not to be out in the woods .
My best regards to all of you
good shooting all the way
Waidmannsheil
and take care of yourself

Welcome, Wisent! Looking forward to reading your persective on the topics discussed here. I also dream of hunting in Africa and sometimes Scotland.

Hello TXGunNut,

thanks for your kind words, the pity is, when I was 20 a professional hunter from Kenia offered me to work with him (rather for him) as his assitant in Kenia for one year, I only had to pay the flight and the clothing , not even a rifle.
I just had begun studying the law on Frankfurt University and so my father argued against, at least concinced me to be "adult about it"...
So I gave in, never having in mind that some day ( as it is now-) my handicap would render it impossible to go to Africa and march miles after miles on an elephant's or Mbogo's track.
That is the reason why I wrote !Africa w a s my dream, sometimes you have to bury your shattered dreams....
But Scotland, the Highlands, I think this iss a possibility, at least a friend of another forum ( for German hunters) told me - so let's see what's coming up.

Have a nice weekend

Welcome to the board ! Your dream of Africa is a common one among hunters. You’ll be talking to a lot of Americans around here, so please allow me the honor of inviting you to hunt here; if you find it a desire and possibility.
This area is full of whitetail deer, turkey, and other smaller game. A mobility handicap shouldn’t be a problem, nor would a loaner gun. It isn’t anything near the romantic vision of Africa, but each area has it’s own beauty. When I was a kid, in addition to Africa and India, the pictures of the Black Forest attracted my interest and imagination.

Hello, Wisent! Willkommen zu unserem bescheidenen Haus! We are always eager to hear how the rest of the world hunts and shoots, so I for one am looking forward to reading about some of your stories.

I am sorry to hear about your physical impairment, but that is no reason to give up on hunting Africa, Scotland, Germany, or Alaska! There is no problem so great that it cannot be overcome, if you have the dream. Of course, it won't be easy, but worthwhile things seldom are. There are outfitters that specialize in catering to handicapped hunters, so a web search would be in order.

I look forward to your participation in our forum.

Welcome Wisent, was wondering do you sell the fur you harvest? If so I assume they use it in coats? Just wondering because there does't seem to be a market in the USA.

Hello Scorch,

thank you for your kind words - and of course you are so right, I'll try to go to Scotland next year for some roebuck and red deer, a friend of a German hunting forum organizes hunting trips for handicapped and made me an offer last night.
Whether or not Africa or Australia will come true, I do not know - but to be honest, one of my dremas when I got my first hunting license was Grizzly hunting in Alaska - Susitna Island was the area whre a friend of mine took his one and it is quite an impressive trophy.
When my father an I together managed a hunting ground for 17 years we had a co - hunter coming from New Jersey - this oldtimer gave me an idea what comradeship between hunters means - he was so open minded and friendly to this 17 years old lad and this is another reason why I hunt - not so many people together, most of the times alone or with one or two real buddies,
smell of a campfire in the cabin, stories and at last the success - and what is really touching me is when you open the action of yourrifle after a real good shot - the smell of the just burned powder - diefferent every time you shoot, but quite unbeatable when you hit the point.
Always good shooting

Hello animal,

what can I say - when I answered Scorch I did describe how friendly and open minded our former friend from New Jersey was. The same I experience today -
Thank you so much for your words - and your are right, every region hs its own beauty, no doubt.
I did never hunt in the Black Forest area but - there were times my legs did not really know thea are handicapped - was hikingther when I was 18 or 19 years old - I've seen one ofthe rarest animals in Europe - a mountain cock and I know some places where they live still today.
Of course they are not allowed to hunt - but just to see them, wonderful.....

Since Germany has so strict gun and hunting laws - I am very fond of blackpowder shooting which is quite uncommon abd even disliked in Germany I try to read everything I can about the U.S. and I am very fond of those periodica like "Hunting" "Guns and ammo" "Combat handguns" and the like. I truly hope to restore my health a little bit next year and when my doc allows me to fly again(circulation problems in the legs) I am quite sure to visit the U.S. - not only for hunting but for professinal reasons too, I am working as a solicitor with a German insurance company and above all product liabilty cases in the Emglish spoken areas of the world.

Good shooting all the way
best respects

Hello crghss,

You are right, the fur of the red fox is used in coats and caps, I am convinced, there´is nothing warmer than a fox lined coat or cap when your are sitting on a tree stand and waiting for the next fox or boar - the leather of the winter boars make very fine gloves and sheaths for my custom knives:o
Waidmannsheil and always good shooting

Aufenthalt-Safe.

Wisent,
I assume what you call a mountain cock is the same as a Western Capercaillie, tetrao urogallus, (Rauhfußhühner) ?… Interesting and beautiful bird … pictures of its mating display remind me a little of the Wild Turkey. Turkeys were once a threatened species here, but thanks to a program of reintroduction and conservation, their numbers went from 30,000 to 5 or 6 million. Hopefully, your game management people can find a way to increase your bird’s numbers as well.

It would not be worth the cost of a plane ticket just to come here to hunt; but if you find yourself in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama, it might be worth a side trip over here for a free hunt. Generally speaking, the fur on our animals is not very good because of the climate, trophy animals are rare, but chances of a successful hunt are extremely high.
I live in east central Mississippi now, hunt mainly in Lauderdale and Kemper Counties (also Pike and Pearl River Counties), and have access to several places where I can take a guest. Guns are not a problem … plenty of them around. Licenses are not a big deal. We are overpopulated with whitetail deer so there are no tags to bother with. With a few weeks notice, I am sure I could arrange something.
Fair warning: I do not know any local speakers of German, and the southern accent might give you a little trouble.:D

I do not know what caused me to offer the invitation. I do not normally do that until I know someone well, but it is genuine.
Best wishes in health and life,
William

G'day. I had the privilege of meeting some of my mothers relatives from Holland a few years ago. They enjoyed the outdoors, fishing in some mountain streams and a night out spotlight shooting after rabbits. There are many opportunities to hunt/shoot from vehicles here in Australia

Hello MK,

thank you so much for your kind words. I fell oblged to answerr you in English since you gave me the honor to drop me a line in my native tongue, thank you so much.
Of course I'm interested to hunt in Australia too, Ive read so many stories about the Australian Buffaloe, we call it Wasserbüffel in Germany.
I truly hope to restore my health so far that my doc allows me to fly greater distances, so I'll be sure to make trips to Australia as well as to the U.S.
Be sure, as soon as I am "ready to go" , I'll contact you.
Thanks again for your friendly words.
I wish you a nice wek, always good shooting and remain with best respects and

Hello animal,

best regards.
Yes indeed, I did mean tetrao urogallus - the problem is, that they are very sensitive when they are disturbed by humans or predators like the red fox and - main problem - badger ( eating the eggs) and wild boar. So all the hunters and rangers who know a place where they are able to live and raise their chickens are obliged to keep the place as a secret.
Since tourism is a great deal in the Black Forest areae I fear the battle will be lost in a few years.
But this is not an argument for leaving the battleground and "ground arms"....

I will contact you.
But besides that, I would be happy if we could keep up our contact, perhaps via pm.

Im also member o the S&W Forum and could experience quite another very nice forum friendship to another member, it developed quite the same way as our contact here in the firing line began.
Of course, in private messages and for my friends I am not Wisent but
Thomas or rather Thom .
So, fell free to contact me if you do want to know smething about me or the German hunting and gun situation ( silly gun laws in here, perhaps you know).
Enough for today, hope you'll recieve this message correctly and I wish you a niche day, a nice week and good shooting all the way.

Warm regards

Thom

Hey, Thomas!

Na, also. Willkommen zum TFL!

Hallo Wieder

Wisent,
