Don't get me wrong , I've been interested and fasinated by guns since I was 5 years old , its just that I've pretty much didn't care about revolvers until recently. Recently I was in the shooting range , and some guy , who owned a .357magnum said he could also fire .38s in his revolver. Yeah , I already knew that the .357magnum is a longer version of the .38sp , but did he mean the .38special or the usual one ? Anyway the .38sp is an improved version of the .38 and the .38 is an improved version of the 9mm Luger. So if I'm not very much mistaken , a .357magnum revolver can fire:

- .357magnum (duh!)
- .38special
- usual .38
- 9mm Luger
- 9mm Kurtz (.380)

Now my question is am I very much mistaken , or am I right ?

.38 S&W is an older and slightly larger diameter cartridge than the .38 Special. Will not chamber in MOST specials and magnums.

.357 Mag is indeed the same dimensionaly as the .38 Special except for length and powder capacity.
9X19 (9mm Luger) is a tapered case and will not chamber in either
the .38 special or the .357 Mag.

.38, .38 Special and .357 Mag are rimmed cases and headspace off of the rim.

Most of the several 9mm handgun cartridges are rimless and headspace off of the case mouth. Hence length is critical.

You can also chamber both the 38 Short Colt and the 38 Long Colt in either 38 Special or 357 Magnum Revolvers. The 38 Long Colt is the parent cartridge of the 38 Special, and the 38 Short Colt is the parent cartridge is the parent cartridge of the 38 Long Colt.

Just a few things.

The usual 38 is the 38spl.

The thing that was special about the 38 special was that it used smokeless powder.

The 38 has been around a long, long time, way before any of the 9mm.

The semi-automatic members of the 38 or 9mm family are the 380, the 9x18, the 9x19 and then the 9x21 and 9x23 that are not seen as often. There is also a 9x20 that was designed to be used in the SiG 230 and a few other police handguns but that is almost never seen on this side of the pond.

Maybe this will help.

From left to right: 380(9mm Kurz), 9mm Makarov, 9mm (parabellum, luger), 38 S&W (Colt New Police, Webley 380), 38 special, 357Magnum, 45acp, 45Colt.
