I‘m new to the forum…My shooting experience is minimal. I have shot .22LR rifle for target and 12ga. shot guns. It was a while ago, maybe 25-30 yrs. I’m a current resident of Florida and have been able to obtain a CWL. Do not own a handgun but want to buy one shortly. I am also in the market to purchase my first long range rifle to be use for target shooting and one day hunting. I am not a hunter but would like to get into the sport eventually. My logic is to refine shooting skill prior to hunting expeditions. We are also in the process of relocating to CA, perhaps north of LA. And prior to our move I would like to already have purchased the firearms stated above.

I’m looking forward to hearing from members’ advice and opinion on gun purchase and what to expect from the State of California. First firearm for purchase will be a new Browning Stalker Xbolt Carbon Fiber .308 w/ Leopold VXR Patrol 3-9x40. I’m trying to keep my budget less than $1000 on rifle and less than $600 on scope. Second firearm will be a new Colt 1911 .45 caliber…not sure which model or barrel length.

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years.

God bless,

Carlos

Any modern bolt action rifle in .308 will do fine for any game in California. The x-bolt is a good hunting rifle but might not be the best target rifle.
You might consider getting a .22 rifle to supplement the .308.

A 1911 is one of the most enjoyable handguns you'll ever shoot. I very much prefer a full sized version.
Till you start reloading .45 ammo is going to be expensive, so once again consider getting a .22 handgun as well.

Thanks for the advice...I'm looking at Colt M1991A1 45 ACP 5" Matte Stainless Semi Auto Pistol O1091. Like the look in stainless steel. Probably buy both guns when I return to Florida.
