Hi there, I'm a 70 year old newbie. Some friends gave me a 50 cal Hawken Kit gun for a retirement present. It's all together but not fired yet. I already have the fever:rolleyes:

Welcome to the forum! You will find that we also have the fever and love talking about burning powder in just about anything that will hold a charge, every chance we get.
I'm just coming back in from making a good bit of smoke this afternoon with the ol' revolver and now it's time to talk powder for the rest of the night. ;)

Do you have a picture of the rifle? We love a picture around here!:D

Hi good hearing from you guys. I will post a picture soon. I have not put a finish :Don the stock yet and am in fact practicing carving on scrap materials with the hope of becoming proficient enough to carve something into the stock. My old eyes and shaky hands may make me think better of this idea as I practice more. Maybe I better post a picture before I ruin the stock with a finish and an attempt at carving on it. I stayed up past midnight just reading all the interesting posts / threads. I am already addicted.

Welcome to the forum.

We are all aflicted with a common disease for which no one seems to be seeking a cure.

Welcome js.
Never to old to enjoy the BP. My old man picked up his first ever BP gun from me some months back. An 1851 brasser. He had never shot a BP gun before and he is 65 now. Headed to 66 soon. Sure, he shoots his modern guns more than the cap and ball, but he discovered a new way to enjoy the shooting sports. Hopefully you do too:).

...old man...is 65 now. Headed to 66 soon.
Lots of us 'old men' (based on that definition) on this forum. You may have heard the old aphorism, "Never pick a fight with an old man. If he's too old to fight he'll just kill you." We do our best to live up to that.;)

haha yeaup! Maybe thats the whole reason behind the value my father instilled in me to "RESPECT MY ELDERS" Maybe he was looking out for my well being. :D

First Attempt at uploading pictures of my 50 Cal

I'm still learning this computer stuff. Here are 2 pics of my rifle taken from my phone. I do not know why 1 can be enlarged and the other can't. I'll keep trying and learning. I have seen some pictures directly show on the screen of members when you read their thread. Any help doing this would be appreciated. Also is there any way to completely delete a post when you realize you have completely screwed it up ?

Help with posting pictures...
http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=292842
click this link, it will take you to a thread (on this site) that will give you some instructions on posting pictures within the post itself instead of loading them as attachments. I use photobucket for my pictures, that will make sense after you read the thread in the link above. It's a multi step process but don't let that scare you, its simple after youve done it once or twice. :)

Double-Set?

Hey Pap,
Either the picture isn't that good but i do know that my eye aren't that great either. I don't think I see a double-set trigger. If I don't, you might want to consider one and if it's there, Please excuse. ..... :p

Good work and;

Thx for the responses

Pahoo,
Its not a double set trigger ( I had to look that one up ) Where can I procure one ?:o
Logan Thanks for the picture load info I'll try it when I put my double set trigger on it.:)
Thanks to everyone. This is a great place to spend an hour or two every day:D

Hey, welcome from another "older gentleman" new guy.

I've just started hanging out here, and it's great!

It's addictive.

Double-Set

Where can I procure one ?
That trigger guard is just begging for a double-set. Go to Dixe Gun works as well as other places. In the long run, you will be glad you installed one and is certainly, "In the Spirit". .... :)

Have fun and;
Be Safe !!!
