Newbie seeks 20 ga. to join Sons.

Hey. I'm new here but an old gun enthusiast.

Just bought both my son and my son-in-law new Mossberg 20 ga. pumps. Now I'm broke, lol, and still need a 20 ga. for myself to join them this fall to hunt chickens. (By the way, I have never seen so many chickens this spring as we have this year. It's been a soft winter for them.)

As I am not really a shotgunner, I do not know what used shotguns to watch for. I am a lefty but not anal about it. I will look at any good or better shape 20 ga. I like the Ithica but have not seen any 20 ga. out there. Any suggestions?

Too bad you are in Canada, I have a 500C in 20 ga I would sell cheap.

As a lefty that isn't going to pound thousands of rounds through the gun a Mossberg 500 is a good choice. It has the safety where it belongs, is lefty friendly and doesn't cost a lot brand new. You can reverse the safety on an 870 but it will cost a little more than a 500, and is quite a bit heavier for long chicken walks.

If you can, look for a Benelli Montefeltro in 20. 5.5 pounds and reliable with field loads. It will probably cost at least 2X what a new 500 will used, but for long walking hunts they sure are nice.

Get out of the way on my way out of the door. got it. lol. And don't let the door hit me in the butt on the way out either.

Benelli is nice. I think a good used gun would do the trick. Sorry to say it is very difficult to import privately a used firearm into Canada.

You might try looking at the browning BPS. Tang safety is a definite plus (every time you mount, you KNOW weither the gun is on safe or not), and it looks nice and is well built.

I used one in younger days (err. . . not that long ago :D).

Plus, if you get one of the older ones, they have really good wood and nice scrollwork to boot! *ducks*
