NEWBIE: Ruger GP-100 OR the New S&W/C&C

Hi: I'm new to guns but not this forum. I received a lot of good feedback from you on the Ruger GP-100 but it seems like it's a pretty big/heavy gun. I want it for defense primarily and some conceal and carry. My concerns are mostly around safety because I'm so new at this and never grew up around guns. I have small hands with little strength in them so I also want a comfy grip with minimal kick.
Recently I read about two new Sand Ws in the Cobat Handgun mag. but didn't buy the mag. becuase I think mags. are a waste of money. When i looked on their website I couldn't find these babies. They're .22 with only a 1 3/4 in. barrel and got rave reviews. What do you guys think????It's a lot of money and I want a gun i can bond with. :)

I'd reccomend a S&W Mod 60 or a Ruger sp101 in .38 special, not too much recoil/kick, .22 is really not a self defense/carry gun round in my opinion.

While a short-barreled .22 is better than a stick, it's still a poor choice for either self defense or target and plinking uses.

S&W products are uniformly good, but a snubby .22 is fairly limited in its useful function and is generally not regarded as terribly effective for personal defense (though my child bride owns and shoots one and likes it much). Over the long haul, you would probably be better served with a .38 or .357. The range of "power" available makes it more suitable for your intended purposes. Start out with target loaded wadcutters (very little recoil) and gradually move up to more powerful self-defense loads (with a bit more recoil). Or if you are interested in "accumulating" firearms, get the Smith .22 now, enjoy it for a while (it is as cheap to shoot as it comes), and thereafter add a similar-size and similar-weight Smith .38 or .357.

See if you can't find a used Ruger Security Six with the 2 3/4" barrel. It'll have the strength of a Ruger but be lighter and have a better trigger than a GP 100.

Take a look at a Taurus 85. This a light al. alloy type, chambered in .38Spl. +p with a 3" barrel. It is easy to handle, very smooth single & double action and minimal recoil for a 3" snubby. I have been carrying this one for over a month.

Sp101

I second the SP101 Ruger in .38 Spl or perhaps .357 Magnum if you want more of a stopper. These guns are well priced and tough as nails.

SP-101 in .357 with a barrel length depending on our body type and usual wardrobe... longer is better, but the 2 1/4" is OK if that's all you can hide.

The SP-101 seems to have a fairly small grip-trigger radius, it seems a bit small for my fairly large hands. It probably would work well for your small hands.

.357 will let you shoot lighter .38's, then you can graduate to .357 when you feel comfortable.

If .22 is all you think you can handle right now the .22 is better than nothing.

Another option is the .32 H&R magnum... it's recoil is similar to the .38, but maybe a little lighter than the high end .38 loads. It might be possible to find a "light" .32 load for practice that would be just a bit heavier than a .22.

Sp101 in 38spl. Never thought I would recommend a 38 but new ammo technology has greatly improved the 38. I would only use 38 +p for self defense. Try Cor Bon's new load.
