Hey thanks in advance for any help!

My question is, I have a buddy who aquired an AR-15 from a relative who passed away. The rifle is a DPMS .223/5.56, but the magazines say 6.8mm. There was a note in with the from the seller who his relative must have gotten the gun from. It must have been a custom build. The note has a reference to it being a 6.8mm. My question is, how do I tell if it is converted to a 6.8mm? If it is a 6.8mm, would it be only the barrel that is different? Can a different barrell be purchased to make it back to a .223/5.56 if it was converted? Thank you!!!!

I think you need a barrel and bolt carrier group (BCG), and that most people simply have a separate, complete upper assembly because switching out BCGs tends to shorten overall service life.

However, I could be mistaken.

Your best bet is to move this question and thread to The Art of the Rifle forum in The Hide subsection.
