Newbie question - where to buy Deringer/NJ gun laws

Hey all,

I've been looking for a double-barrel, pearl-handled Deringer for my boyfriend's birthday in late April, but am not having much luck. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Also, I'd like to keep it a surprise as long as possible, but know that he would have to fill out a license to keep it in his house...does anyone have a bit more insight into Northern New Jersey gun laws?

You can email me directly at: gipsonj@live.com

Thanks much,

Jamie

He doesn't need a license to keep it. He needs a license to PURCHASE it. Once purchased (& effectively "registered in NJ") I don't believe any license is needed. (There is no real way to get a concealed permit in NJ for a regular human). In general, he needs a NJ Firearms Purchaser ID card. Also, since it's a handgun in NJ, he needs a handgun purchaser permit. This is separate from the ID card.

In NJ, you go through a multi month wait to get the FPID the first time around. You also get the handgun permits at that time. Future handgun permits take about 4-6 weeks to get. Even if HE already had an FPID, he'd still have to apply for another handgun purchaser permit.

Long story short -- there is no way to keep it secret and no way to make it quick. To avoid strawman purchaser crap, give him the money and let him buy the gun for himself. May not be the same to you, but it's the legally safe way to do it.

Long story short you cannot buy it without the proper license, you cannot give it to him unless you go through an FFL and transfer it legally which means HE needs a license.

I don't know when his birthday is, but you're going to need 2-6 months to get a license so I'd start now. Have him get the license, then once it comes in take him shopping and pay for it for him.

Welcome to NJ gun buyer BS.

Don't pay for it for him. Give him the cash to pay for it himself (and don't do that inside the gun shop). Though it may be unlikely to raise any eyebrows (woman buying a man a gun), one person paying for another's gun in the gunshop itself is a big no-no. They may think that you're using his clean record and license to get yourself a gun. It's not uncommon that a gang member would have their girlfriends and whatnot (and their clean records) acquire guns for them.
