Newbie Question: Practice with 870 HD

New to shotguns, but not to shooting. I have access to an indoor range that allows lead shot up to and including 000, but no slugs or steel. Don't have access to outdoor range, clays, etc. Just bought an 870 in the H.D. model, mainly for home defense.

Anyone care to offer tips on practice? My thought was to go to the range and take some 00, some #4, and some #7-1/2, all in 2-3/4" shells, and shoot about 5 rounds of each, starting at the near position (7 yds) and working back to full-range (25 yds).

Thoughts? Tips?

TIA,

The Archives have some good COFs, and a little inventiveness can produce others.

If you're brand new at shotgunning, forget speed at first and concentrate on proper form. Old threads here about mounting techniques may help. Once you're grooved in, then speed it up, multiple target COFs, etc.

Chances are there's a trap and skeet range near you. Hitting a 4" disc moving at 50 MPH is great practice and familiarization. Doing doubles is superb training for fast target acquisition.

Good luck, enjoy, and sing out if there's questions...

If you are going to shoot a SG indoors, get good, no make that great, ear protection! Be prepared to get some angry looks from the guys on the line with the .22's! ;)

I'm just glad I wasn't there the night the guy had his Desert Eagle .50 there!

Wait, what am I saying? I LIKE loud noises!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.
