I have recently purchased a Rossi M971 .357 revolver. Can I shoot .38+p in it without damage. If im just plinking with it would it be better to shoot .38 in it rather than .357 to reduce wear? As you can tell Im new to the .357 caliber(Ive only had 9mm).any help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Big Red

Big Red: You can shoot .38, .38 +p, or .357. I'm not familiar with the Rossi. I know that some .357s will lose their timing quicker when shooting full power .357s. But I wouldn't particularly worry about it. I suspect you'll have to shoot thousands of rounds of .357 for it to be a problem.

Personally, I find 158 grain .357 to be unpleasant enough that I will never shoot enough to wear out my S&W 66. I much prefer .38 +P or my own wimpy .38 wadcutter reloads.

But your tolerance for muzzle blast and recoil may well exceed mine.

I wish you luck with your rossi.Every one that I know that had one had major problems. The last one I shot(friends)locked up after 18 rds of light loaded 38s.I have another friend that teachs CCW and never has had a rossi complete his course without problems.
I would recommend you trade it off while it still works and get something better.Taurus or a used S&W.

I'm old and deceitful.

I have been shooting Rugers in .357 for 20 years, blackhawk GP-100's I have found that a quality revolver will do just fine. For plinking I shoot 158gr. .38 Spl and save the full tilt magnum ammo for defense. But from time to time I shoot some Magnum's just to remind me what a .357 can really do :D

I love the Federal Nyclads in 38 special.. OOOOOH What a Flash!!!!! Doesnt help you tacticly but they are awesome.

I have a Smith 686 357 for nightstand duty. I keep 38+P HP's loaded at all times. I would really hate to fire off Magnum loads indoors.
