Hello, board I am 20 years old and in 2 months will turn 21 I want my first pistol to be really nice and decided so save my pennies and get an HK USP .45. I want something I can trust my life with. Well, any way a buddy of mine who does not like foriegn designed pistols told me Hi-Point!!,or Smith & Wesson auto loaders were better. He also said the Sigmas were nicer and HK is over priced. This is hard for me to swallow but I know more about rifles than pistols can you guys help me out. Thanks.

You made the right choice.

Of the three that you named, I wouldn't touch a Hi Point and I don't think S&W semi-autos are worth the price that is asked for them.

The USP wouldn't be my choice for a handgun, given that they don't fit my hand, but they have proven themselves to be excellent handguns.

When your friend starts yapping about it, just nod your head, go "uh huh" every once in awhile, and think about how long your USP is going to be giving you good service, which is a LONG time.

I agree. I think that the HK would be a fine choice. As a general rule you cant go wrong with a sig, HK, or glock. They are all very reliable guns. Whether people like them or not is another story. I dont personally like HK and glock but that is not because I think they are bad guns. Just personal taste. Stick with the HK, it will be fine.

I just turned 22 and made my first handgun purchase last week. I shot a lot of guns and decided to get the HK usp .45. It fits my hand perfectly and just feels and shoots awesome. I am very happy with my decision. It is a little more expensive than others but I believe that you get what you pay for.

If you get the HK I don't think that you will be disappointed. Remember, you have to shoot it before you buy it to make sure it works for you.

I would have a tough time.........

choosing between SIG, Glock, or HK. So, I have all three of them in 45 ACP. Each is excellent with its own particular set of strengths and weaknesses. If HK fits you better then you probably have made the right choice. Good shooting.

I'd not trust my life to a Hi-Point, nor a S&W Sigma. The other S&W autos aren't to my taste. HK is a bit expensive, but the quality is worlds ahead of those mentioned by your buddy.

I think the USP is a wonderful choice. It is one of the best. .45 is a good reliable and accurate cartridge that shoots well in the USP. I will only make two money saving recommendations:

Buy lightly used, if available. There are a ton a mostly unshot weapons out there at reduced cost-take advantage.

Consider the 9mm. For a slight reduction in power you get an accurate, lethal cartridge that allows you to shoot twice as much per dollar spent. But the USP is so wonderful in .45, you'll do great either way.

Yes the HKs are a little pricey...but so are Porsches. ;)

Don't expect to get a T-Bone steak on the McDonalds 99¢ value menu.

I recommend you buy the absolute best handgun you can afford (especialy while you're single...assuming you still are :) )

I have a very low opinion of S&W semi-autos, the one I owned was a big time POS.

I think you should get the HK, or possibly also look into a Sig 220 or Glock 21.

Your buddy is confused. The USP is an EXTREMELY good choice. HiPoints are just scarily bad guns, and Smegmas aren't much better. Traditional S&W autos (e.g. 4506, 4006, 1006) are good guns generally, though.

It is hard to go wrong with a HK anything if you can afford it. I don't own any, but the ones I've shot & handled were darn impressive.

How good a friend is he? Sigma? Hi-Point? Your instincts are right. The USP 45 is a fine choice! The next thing you'll need is at least 1000 rounds of ammo and range time. Enjoy, stay safe & welcome to TFL ;)

If your friend was talking about cars instead of guns it would sound like this.

"A BMW, man I don't like those foreign cars. You should buy American. You should get an AMC Pacer or a Plymoth Duster."

Your friend is your friend, but he's one lost sheep where handguns are concerned. Anyone who recommends a Hi-Point or a S&W auto over an HK USP needs to quickly get out of the business of offering advice on handguns.

HK USP, Sig P220, Glock 21, CZ97, Ruger P97 (or any of the variants of the aforementioned from their respective manufacturers) are pistols which I would happily and proudly own.

I choose the G21 because the weapon as a system functions very, very well for me. But I would not hesitate to add an HK USP to the fold, because it is an awesome piece of work. If that's where you are headed, then I would say you're headed in the right direction.

Let us know when you turn 21, and let's have a range report! :D

And remember, alcohol and firearms do NOT mix, so if you're going out partying on your b-day then put off the pistol purchase until the next day (or until after your hangover wears off, whichever comes first :D).
