Hey all,
I am going to treat myself here in a few days and I think that I want an AK. I already have an AR so I thought that I should get an AK to play with.
If you all had no more then 400 bucks to spend what would you get? I would like it to be the original caliber and also be able to accept high capacity magazines.
Thanks for the help and advice,

Nala

Nalapombu,

You'll probably get moe responsies over at The Art of the Rifle Forum.

I'll move your thread over there for you.

I have seen some of the Egyptian and European Ak's that have a finish that looks like someone one used a paint brush and some old paint. Also the metal work was crude. I'm not saying all of these Ak's are like that just some, from some manufacturers. A friend of mine has a Euro AK (I can't temember if its a Romanian or Hungarian) and the front sight is canted, and he can't sight it in. Look around. Better Ak's cost more $$

BTW I'm selling my Chinese MAK90, Nice rifle, low mileage. If you want a picture send me an email and I'll send you a Picutre. berthold@uslink.net

I have to agree with Berthold, sure you can get a new SAR 1 or an SAR 2 for a lttle less than $300,but there are all kinds of MAK 90's out there from $3-500.These are much higher in quality than the Romanians. They have thicker barrels, straight sights, and they have a blued finnish.Check out Gunsamerica, you can compare them all the different AK's there. Also check to see if they have all the US parts to be legal.Berthold might have a good deal for you.

Yeah, for the money the Romanian stuff is okay. The best ak on the market right now IMO is the Bulgarian SLR. You'll pay a little more though. Good luck!

Love My SAR-1!

I have to pipe up here.... I LOVE my SAR-1.

Bought it from AIM. I specifically requested certain features (straight sights, nice wood, tight mag well, etc.), and the salesman called me back to describe the gun he had ready for me prior to shipping!

I never fired my SAR with the fire control parts that came with it... I replaced them before even firing a shot. My SAR-1 is just what an AK should be: reliable and beautifully ugly! It's a great gun at a great price. No regrets here!

As a side note, I just got my Kobra sight from Tantal (krink@cst.net). $127 delivered to my door. What an awsome piece of equipment. Can't wait to take it out!

Martowski: The fact that you requested good wood suggests to me that you left it on the rifle. If you did and you replaced the fire-control assembly, how did you meet the BATF parts count requirements? I know there are other ways to meet it besides replacing stocks, but I'm just curious as to how other people have done it.

Did you use US-made fire parts? If so, how have they performed? I read a few posts that suggested the US-made replacement parts were too hard (whereas of course some of the US parts Century puts on the rifles are too soft).

If money is not object, try to find pre-ban,
I was going to buy SAR-1 too, but Kali made it illegal to buy it here before I knew, damn,
so I bought SAIGA, made by real russian factory, and I am happy,
BTW, making SAIGA to accept 30 rds original magazine is not that hard job, mostly just changing several parts to US made parts to stay legal,
or if you want .308, I heard lots of good review for VEPR I or II,
