I'm pretty sure there are basically two types of shotgun shells, slug and buck. I really dont know much more then that. I bought a winchester 1300 defender and have only shot standard 2-3/4 in. walmart shells. I would like to know more about the different sizes and what they actually do. The gun is obviously mainly for HD so I would like to have something ready that isnt gonna blow a limp off. Im not trying to throw my life away over some crack head looking to find something he can pawn off. Any replies are appreciated.

Thanks,
Colin

The 2 3/4" shells are all that,s needed for HD, even the reduced recoil ones work well. Buckshot is better for HD than slugs since they don't over penetrate. 00 down to #1 buck. Make sure whatever you pick functions perfectly in you gun and pattern the ammo to see exactly what kind of pattern you get [across the room it will be tight so you do have to aim].

Pay a visit to your local gun shop and pick up copies of the ammunition Product Guides published by companies such as Winchester and Remington. These Guides contain lots of helpful information and can serve as a foundation upon which to build your knowledge of what to feed your shotgun.

Also, consider patronizing your local trap and skeet ranges, and sporting clays courses. By shooting a variety of ammuniton types at various target presentations you can see what works best in your gun.

Good luck, and good shooting!
