Newbie here - Nice place! And a question re: Beretta 92FS

Hello. I just found this forum and like it a lot.

I used to shoot a lot but got out of handgun shooting for years. However, I just bought a Beretta 92FS and can't wait to get back into things.

The question is, the gun I bought is #1 of 1000 of the "Infinite Justice" model (gold engraving of an eagle, "Infinite Justice" and "1 of 1000" on it).

Would I be stupid to shoot in instead of saving it for collector value?

Anyway, nice to meet you all.

DD, welcome to TFL!

If it were me, and if I could afford to buy a second, I'd get a production 92fs, and shoot that. A general rule of thumb regarding limited edition anything is that the lower the number in the sequence, the more valuable it is. Also, regarding guns, my understanding is that they're kind of like cars. Once shot, their value diminishes, the same way a car depreciates the moment you drive it off the lot.

If I were you, I'd consider myself lucky, put it in a safe place somewhere, admire it over a good single malt whiskey from time to time, and buy another to shoot.

HTH.

duckdawg,

Welcome to TFL! Your pistol, just so you know, is 1 of 1000 made, not the first of 1000. All Infinite Justice pistols and all of Beretta's special run pistols are "1 of XXXX." Beretta does this to avoid price spiking/hoarding from dealers/distributors. The Infinite Justice Pistol I saw was @$30 more than the regular FS next to it.

I would say shoot it and have fun. I am not much of a "collector" so I shoot all my pistols.

Hope this helps

Hey thanks for the replies. I'm actually glad to know that this one isnt that special as I am dieing to get to the range at lunch and shoot it.

I think this is going to be fun as hell :)

This looks like a good place to learn stuff as well as get some entertainment. Seems like there is just as much controversy over handguns as there is over in the duck hunting world about shotguns/steel vs xxxx/spinning wing dekes vs jerk lines, etc, etc, etc.

Ah. Interesting. Very deceiving numbering convention they have there. Different than just about any other collectible I know of where each unit is sequentially numbered. Unless you're 'in the know', one could easily surmise you have the first that rolled off the line.

Thanks to BigMike for that tidbit about Beretta!

I hate to say this, because I don't believe in having guns I can't/won't shoot, but I wouldn't shoot it.

The term "Infinite Justice" really put off a lot of folks and hasn't been used after the first week or so of the tragedy...then again, it's just a Beretta, so it's not like it'll be worth 5 grand or anything.

Shoot it.

Personally, I wouldn't shoot it. It was produced as a collector's item--otherwise it wouldn't have been ornamented and made in such a small quantity--and it's inappropriate as a working gun. That's just how it is with collector's guns, whether we agree or disagree. If it's fired, it will no longer be in collectible condition, so you will lose money if you ever sell it. Some dealers are downright scornful, or they pretend to be, of special edition and commemorative arms if they have ever been fired. So the customer takes a hit in trade value.

I agree with the suggestion of other posters: get a standard 92 to shoot, and enjoy the Infinite Justice 92 by keeping it in its original condition. Besides, you can't have too many 92s.

My $0.02.

I'm probably...

...the wrong person to answer this, as my 1 of 300 (or 400, depending on who you ask) Performance Center PC-13 is a frequent carry or range companion.

I'd say "shoot it".

...and welcome to TFL! :D

Welcome to TFL

I am dieing to get to the range at lunch and shoot it.
I'm officially jealous ... I wish I could go to the range at lunch (damn this half hour "lunch hour" I'm stuck with) :(

I wouldn't be afraid to shoot it some...as long as you clean it well it shouldn't lose much (if any) value, but whatever you do DON'T PUT IT IN A HOLSTER ... especially Kydex. That will uglify it faster then anything.

I do agree that you should get a regular 92 for most of your range shooting.

...Seems like there is just as much controversy over handguns...
Oh yeah, we get in a few knock down - drag outs here, but it's all among friends :)

Just remember; "Arguing on the internet is like running in Special Olympics ... even if you win you're still retarded." :D

Well thanks everybody for the input. I listened carefully and lust won so I shot it anyway. Heck, I've only ever sold one gun in my life, back in '77, and I still regret it so I doubt I'll sell this one.

And I'm glad I shot it. This gun fits my hand like it was cloned from my DNA. Very smooth shooting and certainly more accurate than I am. You hardly know when the thing goes off. Man, handguns have come a loooong way since I last shot!

As a burrito owner I would say shoot it - the value is not gonna go up much if any.

Case in point: most any burrito owners will agree that the finish on the Italian models is better that than the current flavor.

However, that does not make my Italian Burrito worth any more on the market today.

Shoot it and enjoy it.

I agree with everyone!

Shoot it!
BUT.....
Get a used plain-jain 92 to beat up on.

I've got an Elite (not II) 92G with about 2500 rounds through it. Still looks new, but I want to start shooting more 9mm than .45 (cheaper) and I LOVE the Beretta. I'm also hoping to get into IDPA next summer if I get the oportunity/time/money as well as some classes; and I don't want the Elite to take the holster wear and dings, etc (after all, they don't make them anymore, only the EIIs).

Solution: Tomorrow (about 14 months after getting the Elite) I sign Maryland's "Promise to be a Good Boy" papers and start my week of waiting for a stainless 92FS, police trade-in, w/ std-cap (15 rnd) mag for $545.

I plan to shoot it till you can't see there ever were lands-n-grooves in the thing. Had a new box of 1000 rounds delivered just last week..... :D

I'll get some pretty grips for the Elite, and put a couple hundred rounds a year through the thing, if nothing else as an excuse to clean/lube it.

Rovert,

I have seen lots of different collectible guns labelled 1 of 1000, or ever how many were made.

I dont think there is anything misleading about that at all; in fact it is done a lot.

If you want to know how early production a gun is, check the serial number.

My local shop also has one of these Berettas, which also has "1 of 1,000" engraved on it. Unless a gun is very rare and unfired, I'd shoot it.

I think you made the right decision by shooting it.... just take extra care of it. Congrats! :)
