Newb Range Report: I'm a spaz

Took my new Marlin 795 with freshly installed Tech Sights to an indoor range today. I wasn't able to get consistent enough groups even kneeling with a rolled up towel for a rest to zero it. I went through maybe 500 rounds of various types, at 7m. I think it makes sense to get tight groups at what ever distance I can manage them, then move out.

I found that Federal Bulk and CCI Blazer worked well as far as feeding, but Winchester Xpert HV was awful, lots of FTE and FTL. So I have a couple of go-to economy loads.

After a while I started on rental guns. Didn't care for the Beretta CX4 storm. ATI AK-22 all-synth felt pretty good, and it was nice to have a high-cap mag, but it struck me as a little hoaky - full size mag, most of it wasted space so it looked more like the "real" thing. Had some misfires that were a mild pain to clear - that little cartridge gets mashed in there whether or not it fires.

Tried a few pistols, started with a .22 Sig mosquito that I managed to do ok with at 3 m. Moved up in weight class to a Beretta 92FS, which was ok. Didn't like the Glock 17, didn't feel right. The Springfield XD 9 felt great, and I did slightly better with it than the others. It's kind of an ugly duckling, and compared to Glocks that is saying something.

By this time I'd been there for 4 1/2 hours. Just had to try a Bushmaster AR-15 in .223. When some people were firing it one lane over it was a little alarming, but it was much mellower to be on the dishing-out end. Not much recoil at all. Pretty fun.

4.5 hours at the range is always good day!!

I'm not a huge fan of Glocks, either. Just didn't fit me right.

You didn't say what experience level you have.. have you had training on proper technique? That's a huge part of being accurate. Its also good to learn before you develop bad habits that you have to break. I commend you for keeping to distances you know are reasonable for your level of experience.

We can't let you stat at "spaz" level forever, you know! ;)

if the range offers a class i'd take it. try putting a bunch of rounds through one gun like a .22 or a 9mm and see what it looks like. learn to shhot with iron sights first. dont forget revolvers, shooting a revolver single action can improve your trigger control. dont expect to do great things by shooting guns that are new to you. i can do things with my guns now that i couldnt when i got them. most of all, be safe and have fun!
