I was looking at the 870 wingmaster/express. i've read some posts about these models, but I wanted to find out what else I should be looking for when evaluating the quality of a shotgun, and where I should go to find the deals. thanks

Can't go wrong.

I own 2 870's. I've tried some other shotguns but I keep selling them and coming back to what's confortable and reliable. My 870's will cycle any shell made, will work with amazing amounts of grit, mud, muck, grass, weeds, dog hair, etc congeled in the action, and they're economical to buy.

My 870 express has killed over a thousand ducks and countless geese, quail, dove, grouse, and turkeys. And it works as well as (actually, better than) the day I purchased it. Now it's my backup gun and I shoot a new 870 super mag. Same story with the new gun: bulletproof. I've fired thousands and thousands of rounds from these 2 guns and I've never been let down.

I've also used my (unloaded) 870 by the stock to dig out my Toyota from the mud, and as an emergency boat paddle. Versitile! :D

If you're looking for a safe, blue-collar starter gun, look no further.

While I don't use my shotguns as paddles, crowbars or water depth testers, I do regard the 870 as the ne plus ultra of shotguns. I started shooting one in the 50s and after 40 some years, maybe 70K shots, I've had two parts break.

Mine the archives and see why everyone should have an 870...

PS, Mossberg, Winchester and Ithaca make good shotguns also.....

Remington has made five or six million M870s. They must be doing something right.:)
I use an 870 for deer hunting and HD. It's 12 bore, which was a mistake on my part. 20 gauge is more than enough for both purposes.
