An armed robber's retailing instincts kicked in during a raid on a West Auckland service station - he stopped what he was doing and tried to serve three customers.
But the man, suspected of robbing up to nine service stations across Auckland in the past couple of weeks, would not make much of an attendant - he was flummoxed by the electronic till.
The robber walked into the Mobil service station on Great North Rd, Glendene, at 9.30 pm on Wednesday and threatened attendant Jonathan Rubin with a knife.
Mr Rubin, aged 18, said the man gagged him and left him in a back room.
The robber then realised that three customers had entered the shop, so took off his beanie and gloves and went to serve them.
Surveillance camera footage shows the robber walking casually around the counter, watched by the customers, approach the till, give it a quizzical look and then walk out empty-handed.
A police spokesman said Mr Rubin then removed his gag, went out and served the bemused customers and eventually rang the police.
Police believe they know who the robber is but have been unable to find him.
