NEW YORK SPECIAL FAX ALERT
6/15/00
SENATE RECESSED, BUT LIKELY TO HEAD BACK TO ALBANY NEXT WEEK TO TAKE UP "UNFINISHED BUSINESS"
Last night, the New York State Senate adjourned for the legislative year, "subject to the call of" Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno. Prior to leaving, the Senate did not consider Governor Pataki's five-part "gun control" package, despite intense pressure from Handgun Control, Inc., various "gun grabbers," "mugger huggers," some Assembly members and of course the biased media. There is a strong probability that the Senate will return to Albany for one day next week to take up some final items, if there is agreement with the Assembly and the Governor.
In light of this, it is absolutely imperative that you make it a point to contact your Senator this weekend and early next week and respectfully urge him/her to vote against any "gun control" measures that the Governor and the Assembly propose! Also, be assured that the NRA and its affiliated clubs, organizations and members have not agreed with, endorsed or support in any way any of these bills which seek to take away or invade our rights to hunt, shoot competitively, defend our persons, homes and businesses, or otherwise enjoy the shooting sports, alone or together with family members and friends.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION, THE GOVERNOR'S 5 POINT PLAN WOULD:
Define as "assault weapons" all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, making possession of them a felony. Don't let anyone tell you that this is only a "mirror of the existing federal law"-- it's new and much worse.
Mandate the sale of trigger locks for all firearms, with criminal penalties for failing to comply.
Go far beyond the federal law and jeopardize the future of gun shows in New York State.
Make it unlawful for those under 21 to obtain a pistol license, even for hunting, competitive shooting or by members of the military;
Create a new, expensive bureaucracy to build a "DNA like" database which is untested, poorly conceived and exists nowhere else in America. All this would do is drive handgun manufacturers out of the state, making handguns more expensive and difficult to buy and sell, and waste your tax dollars.
We don't come to you often and ask you to drop everything and make a personal effort -- to go the extra mile. But this time we are. On your behalf and on behalf of all lawful gun owners in this state, we have fought despicable and untruthful attacks on our Second Amendment rights to legally own, use and enjoy rifles, shotguns and handguns, and to pass on our traditions to family and friends.
Many of our elected officials have stood shoulder to shoulder with us and have resisted repeated entreaties from well-meaning but uninformed folks, and withstood unfair criticism from the liberal media who think they know best how the laws should be written. But we know we elected our local officials to legislate, not the media -- and we don't want the media to make laws.
THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE, SO PLEASE AT LEAST TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS TODAY:
Call, write or e-mail your Senator and speak out on this issue.
Take this special alert to your rod and gun, or fish and game club this weekend, and post it on the bulletin board.
If you know your Senator has been a friend over the years, thank him/her for his/her support and urge him/her to stand firm.
Tell all your family, friends and fellow gun owners to take the same actions.
If you need assistance finding out who your lawmakers are, please use the "Write Your Reps" tool.
For all your help and support we give you our thanks, and want you to know that we appreciate your contributions to our mutual cause!
