Wow, only 44,485 "assault weapons" registered. That's low. That's even lower than Connecticut's 50,000. I think it's safe to say the gun owners in New York are refusing to comply with the law. Everything I have seen on the internet has said the number of semi automatic firearms that are referred to as "Assault Weapons" by some, is around 1 million for New York.

I wonder if there will be a push back by Cuomo?

When California first passed their laws on the subject, a similar thing occurred.
But like the lobster in the boiling pot, people gradually got used to the idea.
After a few years, the idea of registration became ordinary and normal.

The large voting blocks of the urban areas will keep such laws in place and resistance may occur in rural areas.

However, attrition and the need to keep the guns hidden will lower their profile eventually.
