New Vaquero, first impressions:

With some recent threads about poor Q.C. at Ruger, I was worried about the Vaquero I had on order.
Well, it finally arrived.
Stainless, .357, 4 5/8in. barrel, with Ivorex grips.

Wow! She's a beauty.

The cylinder/pin seems to be aligned well.
Cocking, dry firing six times was smooth, no binding.
Trigger seems really light. I can't imagine what a spring set would do. I tried removing one leg of the spring, but that made it almost too light, so I put it back.
Fit and finish are top notch.

Only gripes:
1. The grip screw has a small ding, like the screwdriver slipped when installing the grips. I have to look closely to see it, but I would expect better from the factory.
2. When I look directly at the muzzle, there is a scratch on the end of the barrel. I can probably polish it out, and since this is to be a "banging around the woods" gun, I'm not that worried about it, but it shouldn't be there.

Upgrades, base pin, spring set, etc. may be in the future.
I want to shoot it first.
I do wish they had kept the smaller frame, as it is a hefty gun.
(40+ oz.), but that should make it last forever, no matter what I shoot in it.
Other than a Bearcat 20+ years ago, this is my first single action.
I'll let you know how it shoots.

I thought of that when I posted this. :)

Don't have a digital camera, so it's either regular photos and scan
them, or tell Wally World to put them on a cd for me.

I wish Ruger had more photos on their web page, and reveiws would be great too.

Mini14jac,

Here is an obligatory picture for Blackhawk until you can get one of yours. Sorry this is 45 colt with out ivory grips but is 4 5/8 and stainless.
:D :D :D

Thanks Blackhorse, that will do just fine.

I think they are basically the same gun, only yours is lighter because of the bigger holes in the cylinder. :(

I'm hoping for a trip to the range Saturday, and will take the camera.

I was, um, checking the operation of the gun last night, (read: Playing with). No ammo in the room of course.

Why is single action so.....neat, cool? Do you know the words I'm searching for?
There is just something about holding that old design in your hand and easing the hammer back......

Mini14jac:

I enjoy shooting all my handguns, but my favorite "Fun Gun" is my .357 Vaquero. Very short barrel, "Sheriffs Model" but I still get a huge rush blazing away with a good single-action.

(I still don't have the hang of this digit-all foe-tog-rah-fee yet, so here is my obligatory, but slightly out of focus pic....
