Just purchased a 99% S&W 29 .44 mag at a local shop on consignment. 5" barrel, custom grips and the smooooothest trigger I ever fealt. My question: what would you recommend in both .44 special and .44 mag as good range and personal defense rounds?

Thanks

Noban,
You are going to enjoy shooting this revolver. I have one. You will have to practice firing different grains of ammo.
I started out with 180gr Mag. jacketed soft points. and 246gr 44special lead round nose.
For hunting I would recommend a 230gr in the mag. But you have a good variety of ammo to choose from. I also have the 5" full lugged barrel. It is a choose piece!!

What a neat pistol. I own several of them. My favorite is a 6 1/2 inch blue Model 29 (Dirty Harry). I also own a 4" 629 and a 4" blue 29. Great guns, one and all. But the best is my Ruger Red Hawk .44 mag, strongest of them all, but not nearly as pretty.

If your grips are not rubber, it may bite your hand a bit. At least it bit my hand using fancy round wood grips on a rounded butt. [Come to think about it I may often get a shock if I put my hand on a nice round butt] :)

For range ammo start at the bottom of the price ladder and work up until you find your desired level of performance.

For defense use light HP's.

Noban...Sounds like another work of art for your collection. The advice above sounds good. May it be treasured by your grandchildren.

Thanks for all the input and encouragement guys. I've always been partial to the S&W revolvers, but never owned one. This one seems to have the deepest, even bluing I have ever seen. What really impressed me (as with all S&W revolvers) is the pronounced rifling at the muzzle - sharp as can be.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until next week to pick it up while the DOJ determines if I am a threat to myself or society.
