New (Used) 629

I already posted this over in the S&W Forum, but I am so excited over this new-to-me gun that I thought I'd post it over here too.

This consignment gun had been languishing on the bottom shelf of the counter at a LGS for a few months.

Partly because of the crappy economy, partly because everyone wants to buy a semi auto and partly because it was priced a bit too high, nobody had purchased it.

I know that there had been several offers on it (including one of my own), but the owner refused to come down in price. Yesterday while I was in there putting a rifle that I had little use for on consignment, the owner of the Smith walked in and significantly lowered the price. In fact it was lower than my offer had been.

Needless to say, I bought it on the spot.

629-4 Classic DX, complete with all the pieces that came with it when it was new.

I will indeed! unfortunately, here in the Peoples Republic of California, we have to wait ten days after we purchase a firearm until we can pick it up.

Two years two months until I leave this socialist paradise forever!
 
A superbly accurate 44 Magnum! My 629 Classic has been one of the most handguns I have ever fired. I like that the DX versions supply an actual test target! I am glad to hear you got it for a good price too!
 
Sweet!! I wish I had kept my 629.

Years ago I went into a gun store in Cailf to buy a S&W Model 66, but they said I would have to wait ten days to pick it up,so I walked out the door with a new 12 gauge side by side coach gun with outside hammers instead.
Go figure huh?
 
Beautiful Smith&Wesson! I am glad you got it. Is it the 6 1/2 inch barrel?
I really like some of the modernizations S&W has done to their revolvers. They really added some great improvements. The cylinder has a nice bevel for easy holstering, the ball detent lock up is nice, I like the removable front sight.
I recently put a 5 inch full lug 629 in layaway. It has an SDM red front sight ( looks like airport landing lights) and a Millet rear. A used gun in great shape. I know people hate the hammer lock, but the revolver was tight, timing was perfect, and had a nice trigger. This is my 3 rd 44 Magnum Smith.
I hope you enjoy it. The accuracy looks first class.
 
That's a fine looking gun.
Looks wise I've always thought the classic 629 is right up there with the python.
 
I do not find California all that bad. I really like my 629 Dx. I carried it in rural areas before I got the 329PD, which is now my .44 magnum carry gun. The 629 is still a hand gun I won't sell, even though the Desert Eagle, or 329PD, is picked up first on the way to the range.

I've had my M29 for 30 yesrs now and still use it .It's seen lots of Metallic Silhouette matches and a bunch of deer .A sweet gun.
Some suggestions -- there's no need to load it hot ,it doesn't kill by velocity ! A good number of factory loads are available or good bullets to load you own. Take care of it and it will last many years.
I would remove that red insert .It glows a lot in the sun !! It comes to 2clicks at 50 yds between in the Sun and in the shade !

I plan to install the gold bead front sight as soon as I get it. I have been shooting my K22 and K38 Masterpieces for many years with the patridge front sights and prefer that type to all others for target shooting. There is also a red bead and a white bead sight in the box, if I don't care for the gold, I'll try those.

I agree with you that these guns don't need to be loaded to the max to perform. While I am not recoil sensitive, I find that as I age I just don't enjoy shooting maximum loads anymore.
