New Trail Gun

Sweet looking piece. Never shot birds head grips. Any major difference from the standard? Recoil feel different?

The birds head grip fits my hand better than the standard plow handle grip. I have both. I don't notice any difference in recoil, but in a holster, the birds head grip definitely caries better.

Sweet! Them birdshead grips look awesome!

Never had a chance to fondle them so I don't know if they fit my paw.

Let us know how it shoots!

Nick, what revolver do you shoot the short Colt in
1 Is it an Open Top Conversion or perhaps a more modern cylinder converted .36 Colt Navy reproduction?
I have been interested in this Cartrige to try it out inmy Cobra .38 Special Derringer.
A friend loaded me some .38 Special "squibs" for the Dreeinger. They consist of just a smidgen (don't know how much) Smokeless powder and a 90 gr rn lead bullet. They are very soft recoiling and not very high velocity. I shot into the sideboard of the target frame with one and it barely stuck in the 1"x1" pine board! Just something to play with...

Here is picture of the results of the first five rounds I fired from the new Vaquero. 15 yards offhand at my indoor range. Ammo was Winchester 250 grain lead cowboy load.

Yup, she's a keeper.

Not too fond of the birdshead grips but the Vaquero makes a nice trail gun. I've used one myself for that purpose for awhile.

Very nice! I have a NV in .357 - love it! That 45 of yours looks like it would be a nice carry piece. Looks like it (you) shoot well with it to!

Thanks, I have an Überti El Patron in .357 that I love. The birds head grip do make the Vaquero a great carry gun on the trail in a crossdraw holster. We ride mules, and single actions are just right.

Nice! Can't complain about POI! All of my original and New Vaqueros needed 'adjustment' to shoot to POA.

BTW, where did you find the particular revolver? That is 'exactly' the style I've been looking for. Blued, 45 Colt, Birdshead Sheriff. I have a Sheriff .44Spec, but as you say the Birdshead looks like it would be a bit more comfortable to CC. My trail guns (5 1/2") normally aren't concealed so not a problem for carry.

Looks like a keeper Mk70...good lookin' and accurate too. Have you slugged the cylinder throats? I ask since mine with a NV bought two years ago that had undersized throats, and accuracy was in the 3+" size...after I had them opened up to a uniform 0.4525", my best loads shot into 2" or less. Hope you have good luck with yours. I do like that bird's head grip on my Single Six in .32 H&R, but haven't shot one in .45 Colt as yet...a range report or two would be good. Best Regards, Rod

I have had a couple birds head gripped 45 Colts in the past I really liked them but have gotten rid of them. I like my sheriff's vaquero 44 special for a trail gun. of course I'm a John Taffin fan so I have owned many in the quest for the perfect packing pistol.
