Wanted a new semi auto .22 for some cheap shooting. Liked the Ruger SR22 and the M&P22. Bought both and they are excellent. I like the M&P just slightly better. Mainly because of the bigger gun feel. Anyone else tried these? Accuracy is very good with both.

I believe he already bought both (?), at least that's how I read his post.

That said, I've never owned either one but spent some time recently looking at them. The M&P looked like the higher quality firearm.

I love my M&P 22 Compact. Closest thing I've found to a "trainer" for the Shield I carry, but I mainly have it for introducing new or inexperienced shooters to handgun shooting and it is great for that. I really like the fact that the manual of arms is pretty close to the other firearms I own. The accuracy isn't quite as good as my father-in-law's Mark II, but I didn't buy it expecting a bullseye pistol and it is plenty accurate for my purposes.

Whats nice is my wife likes to shoot them . She has a Shield for everyday protection but she can practice with the M&P22 and have less recoil and expense. Best of both worlds.

Kramden, do you find one to be "smoother" and better finished? When I looked, the S&W seemed to fit that bill. Just curious.

My first 22 was a Walther P22...... Big mistake. Sold it for what I paid. I decided to go cheap and bought a Sig Mosquito, I know, probably another mistake but I haven't shot it yet so we'll see. If I have to give up on this one I will spring for the S&W or Ruger. Not interested in a target style pistol.

The Smith M&P .22 Compact is one of my favorite new style rimfires, however if you look at the full spectrum my early fifties Llama .22, Star F 110 and Walther PP .22 are all around neat shooters. A S&W Kit gun is about as versitle a .22 revolver as you can find, much of the accuracy and adjustable sights of the K.22 are there for your pleasure.

Not DanPop, but I've heard of people having problems with them being very ammo picky or having cycling issues. I ended up spending the extra for an M&P 22 just based on the slightly better reputation.

I found them both to be pretty good little pistols. I eventually got a Walther PPQ .22 because I wanted something representative of a full-size semiauto. It got me hooked on Walther and now I have a Q5 Match to go with it :)

When I train, I'll usually run 100 through the .22. It's almost as accurate as the Match, and it's a much cheaper way to practice things like quickly coming up on target and engaging. I'll do 50 through the Q5 to practice things where recoil makes a difference, like double-taps or quick target transitions. It's a very effective combo.

I can definitely see where the M&P combo (.22 compact and Shield) would be similar. I really liked the .22 Compact, I just wanted something larger.
