New toy! S&W 66-5

Today I picked up a sweet little pre-lock S&W 66-5 with a 3.25" barrel and Hi Viz sights. Can't wait to get it up to the range for a workout.

Serial number starts with CEK.

What can you all tell me about this gun? Any interesting bits of history I should know?

Also: it's not enough to have the firearm. I need some gear! Which custom holstermaker do you recommend for revolver holsters and speedloader pouches, and why?

Thanks,

pax

I also have a pair of 66s including a -5 , pictured with my 66-1 on top. The 66-5 is really quite a shooter.

Congrats. The -5 versions of the 66 and 686 happen to be my fav. My bud recently picked up that very gun, I believe. He didn't care for the sights (a rear v-notch and big honkin' front, no?), but once replaced, it worked well for him.

For everyday/CC? Seems there are a metric ton of holster makers out there, but I dig my Wild Bill's holster for my 36, and plan on picking up another for my 3" k-frame. He's got speedloader pouches to match as well.

pax,
I show a starting serial of CEF in 10/2000
and a startind serial of CEV in 7/2001

so somewhere between those dates would be my guess..

-5 change happened in 1998 and was a mim hammer
mim trigger in 1997

-6 was ILS

enjoy it..

Pictures Pax, or it didn't happen. ;)

3.25" 66-5.....Sounds like a Lady Smith. If it is, you're indeed a lucky lady! Been looking for one for a while now. It's on my "Buy on sight" list.

No it's the 66 adjustable sight, not the 65, but you have good taste in your wish list: my 65LS is as good as it gets IMHO. Can't recommend it enough.
To the OP - your 3" 66 is not too common either, and actually much sought after. Good find and enjoy it!

Hello PAX,,,

For some reason I thought you were strictly a semi-auto person,,,
But now I know you to be one of the fold. ;)

I recommend myself as the holster maker.

Why?,,,
I could use the money. :p

No seriously,,,
I rarely take orders anymore,,,
Mainly because I can't do the measuring for myself.

But I would recommend a Tom Threepersons style rig,,,
They are just so danged elegant with a S&W K-frame stuffed in them.

It takes any pistol and raised it to Barbecue Gun status.

Have fun shooting your 66,,,
It's a classic.

You got yourself a good gun there. You'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it. As for custom leather, you may have a hard time finding a maker who has a pattern for a 3" K-frame. That was an uncommon variation and I have yet to see a custom holster maker with a pattern for that gun. My favorites are Adams Leatherworks and Kelley Gunleather.

Here are a couple of my 66s, both of which are no-dash versions.

In 1996 Smith and Wesson made a few 66 Lady Smiths. I've been on the look out for one since I passed on it in in the mid 90's.

66 (vs a 65) Lady Smith. Learn something new every day!
-- and irony of ironies doesn't have the shrouded ERH of the 65LS?!

Stainless version of the much prized Model 19.

Congratulations on a fine revolver. As far as leather goes, I use an El Paso Saddlery #88 "Street Combat" for my 2 1/2" M66-2 and I've been nothing but pleased with it. Also, I got an email from them the other day to inform me that, through June 21, you can get 20% off an online order by using the promotion code "Father's Day" at checkout.
